CLOSER LOOK
This is the second straight season that Mangone has earned the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and it comes as no surprise after the Golden Eagles had another outstanding year on the gridiron. Mangone joins an elite list of coaches, including fellow Division III selections Jim Margraff (John Hopkins University), Pete Fredenburg (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor), Larry Kindbom (Washington University in St. Louis) and Kevin Bullis (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater). The five Division III selections are now finalists for AFCA Coach of the Year, which will be announced during the AFCA convention held in January.
Under the direction of Mangone in 2018, Brockport extended its program regular-season winning streak to 22, and posted another impressive postseason run, this time to the 'Sweet-16' of the 2018 NCAA Football Championship. The Golden Eagles finished the regular season undefeated at 10-0, earning back-to-back Empire 8 Conference titles and finished the 2018 season with an 11-1 overall record.
The Green and Gold were strong on both sides of the ball, with a nationally-ranked offense and defense. The offense put its stamp in the Brockport record books, setting a new mark for points in a season with an average of 41.7 per game behind a record 69 touchdowns - 30 of which were through the air, another program best. The Golden Eagles also set a new mark in yards per game with 496.4 and most net rushing yards in a season (2,733).
The Green and Gold defense also earned national attention, as they led several statistical categories for the majority of 2018. The Golden Eagles boasted the best rushing defense, allowing a measly 6.8-yards rushing per game for their opponents and also had the best third down conversion defense, with a 0.158 percentage.
