The first day of the Empire 8 Swimming and Diving championships is in the books and Stevens Institute of Technology won both invidividual events while Nazareth College claimed the relay event.

The Ducks stand in first place with 140 followed by Nazareth with 132 points. Hartwick is close behind in third with 130 points as Utica (70) is in fourth and Alfred (63) is in fifth place.

For the tenth straight year, a Stevens athlete earned the title in the 500 freestyle. Sophomore Isabella Fairman won the event with a time of 5:04.46. She beat teammate Samantha Zdesar (5:09.17) and Hartwick sophomore Channing Lewis (5:19.90).

Stevens sophomore Samantha Geyer made history in the 200 Individual Medley as she became the first Duck in E8 history to win the event. Her time of 2:10.33 was 1.73 seconds ahead of runner-up Utica senior Phoebe King (2:12.06). King's time set a school record for the Pioneers. Hartwick freshman Ceci Mowrey placed third in 2:12.59.

Nazareth rallied to win the 200 medley relay with the foursome of Kathryn Batz, Brittany Heffler, Kaela Santos and Taylor Robey with a time of 1:49.26.  The win marks the second time in E8 history Nazareth has won the event and first time since 2005.  Stevens touched second in 1:49.50 and Hartwick took third (1:51.38).

Competition continues tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.
