The Empire 8 men's swimming and diving teams wrapped up day three Friday night at the 2018 Empire 8 Conference Championship in Webster, NY.
The 200 Butterfly finals got things started on the night with Nazareth freshman John Koch taking the title, marking the first time a Golden Flyer swimmer has won the event in the history of the Empire 8. He swam to a winning time of 1:53.78, edging out Stevens Institute of Technology's senior Brennan Maxwell (1:54.17) who settled for runner-up for the second straight year. Stevens’ Stephen Barlow placed third in 1:55.21.
Nazareth won the 100-backstroke title for the second time in three years as freshman Seth Farrand touched in a NCAA B-cut and school record time of 51.10, to finish just ahead of teammate Gannon Connors (51.43). Alfred’s Andrew Edmister, last year’s runner-up, placed third in 51.62.
Stevens sophomore Tyler Zanki successfully defended his title in the 100 Breaststroke, giving the Ducks six consecutive years with the top position. Zanki won the title in 56.97, while Hartwick sophomore Ryan McLoughlin was second in 57.33 and Alfred junior Richie Berger placed third in 58.69.
Alfred junior Chris Deaver continued his dominance in the diving as he won the 1-meter board for the second time in his career, previously winning in 2016. Deaver posted a winning score of 500.30 points for a personal best score and a new school record! His previous best was a 470.50 and the previous school record was held by Kameron Chambliss '10 and his 477.40 points.
Nazareth’s Sidney Taylor placed second with a score of 455.75 and Utica’s Matt Patton was third with 373.20.
The final event of the night was the 800 Freestyle Relay. Stevens won the event for the fifth straight year, as the quartet of Matt Burk, Trevor Hinds, Daniel Rosenberger and Theo Jagodits posted a time of 6:54.67. Nazareth was the runner up in 6:58.96 and Alfred was third in 7:04.13.
The championships wrap up tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
