The Empire 8 Athletic Conference has announced that 12 student-athletes in seven different sports have been recognized for outstanding play during the week of January 29 - February 4, 2018.... 

Men’s Basketball Player – Houghton
Carl Holmes, Senior, Guard – Cuba, NY/Cuba Rushford
 
Carl Holmes had a breakout week, averaging 23 points on shooting 62 percent from the field and 4.5 rebounds for Houghton. He also shot 9-for-17 (.53) from three-point range for the week. On Friday, he had a career-high 28 points (11-for-13), four rebounds and two assists in 75-74 loss to Alfred. He came back to score a team-high 18 points on Saturday against Utica.
 
Men’s Basketball Rookie – Hartwick
Tommy Kelly, Freshman, Guard – Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna
 
Tommy Kelly averaged 14.0 points per game in three contests for the Hawks. He shot 53% from the floor (16-for-30), made four three-pointers and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. He also averaged 4.3 rebounds per game with four assists and three steals. Kelly had nine points and three assists against Sage on Tuesday and followed it up with a career-high 24 points against Nazareth Friday. He closed the week with nine points Saturday against St. John Fisher.
 
Women’s Basketball Player – St. John Fisher
Nicole Robinson, Senior, Forward – Lawrence, NY/Lawrence
 
Nicole Robinson of the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team stuffed the stat sheet last week as the senior helped the Cardinals clinch a berth in the Empire 8 Championship with wins over Stevens and Hartwick. The two victories extended the team's winning streak to nine games overall. In two starts, Robinson averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 blocked shots, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 12-of-21 from the field overall. Against the Ducks, the Lawrence native finished with second double-double of the year with 20 points, 10 boards and five blocks before adding nine points, five rebounds, five assists and six blocks in a win over Hartwick on Saturday.
 
Women’s Basketball Rookie – St. John Fisher
Sydney Masna, Freshman, Guard – Hebron, CT/RHAM
 
Sydney Masna of the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team played a pivotal role in Fisher's two conference wins last week as Fisher sealed a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship with triumphs over Stevens and Hartwick. The Hebron, Conn. native averaged 12.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists over two starts. Against Stevens, the freshman guard finished with a career-high 14 points and nine boards before contributing 10 points and six rebounds against the Hawks on Saturday. Masna was also a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line last week.
 
Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Stevens
Theodore Jagodits, Freshman – Poolesville, MD/Poolesville
 
Theodore Jagodits won the 200 free (1:48.12), the 100 free (48.16) and was a part of the winning 200 free relay team (1:28.06) as No. 24 Men's Swimming won 13 of 14 races to defeat Hartwick in the final dual meet of the season.
 
Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Utica
Phoebe King, Senior – New Bedford, MA/GNB Voc Tech
 
Phoebe King recorded a Utica College pool-record time of 2:00.61, as she came in first place during the 200-yard freestyle. In the 100-yard freestyle, she placed first with a time of 55.85. Phoebe clocked in at 2:23.55 in the 200-yard IM event, coming in first place once again. She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
 
Women’s Indoor Track Athlete – Houghton
Edena Sanchez, Freshman – Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam
 
Edena Sanchez led Houghton at the RIT Invitational with a second-place finish in the 400 meters and teamed up for first in the 4x400m relay. Sanchez clocked a 1:00.64 in the 400 meters to placed ahead of 22 other competitors. She anchored the 4x400 relay to a winning time of 4:16.42, 6.2 seconds ahead of the runner up and the current top mark in the Empire 8 this season.
 
Women’s Indoor Field Athlete – Utica
Brittany Charlonne, Junior – Rutland, MA/Wachusett
 
Brittany Charlonne set a new school-record in the Pentathlon on Sunday as she posted 2,667 points to place ninth out of 34 entries at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. Charlonne finished with a 10.39 in the 60m hurdles, 1.40m in the high jump, 8.45m in the shot put, 4.84m in the long jump, and a time of 2:40.22 in the 800m run. Charlonne currently ranks 68th on the national indoor qualifying list with her score of 2,688.
 
Men’s Indoor Track Athlete – St. John Fisher
Peter Girardi, Senior – Cicero, NY/Cicero North Syracuse
 
Senior Peter Girardi of the St. John Fisher College men's track and field team highlighted the day for the Cardinals at the RIT Invite after taking the top spot in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:56.22, breaking the previous college record. This 800-flat time converts to a banked track time of 1:54.9, which ranks him 17th in the nation. Girardi now holds national position in four separate events.
 
Men’s Indoor Field Athlete – Utica
Keanu Heedram, Sophomore – Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta
 
Utica’s Keanu Heedram posted a personal best toss of 15.99m in the shot put on Saturday to take home first place at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. He currently ranks 12th on the national indoor qualifying list in the shot put.
 
Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week – Stevens
Thomas Burrell, Senior, Middle Hitter – Somerset, NJ/St. Joseph
 
Thomas Burrell totaled 12 kills on 18 attacks without an error (.667 attack percentage) with eight blocks as Stevens swept Lehman and Rivier to remain undefeated against Division III competition. Burrell also collected three aces.
 
Men’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week – Sage
Scott Sanders, Sophomore, Middle Hitter - Los Angeles, CA/Taft
 
Scott Sanders had 30 kills with only two errors on a .549 attack percentage in a three-match week for Sage. In addition to his offensive stat line he added 14 blocks and eight digs on defense. Sanders totaled 12 kills and six blocks against Elms, 11 kills, five digs and six blocks verse Wells and seven kills over Emmanuel.
