ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Seth Farrand, freshman sensation on the Nazareth swimming and diving team, has been chosen to represent the Golden Flyers later this month at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Farrand, of Franklinville, N.Y. and a graduate of Franklinville High School, is among the qualifiers in the 50-yard freestyle. He won that event at last week's Empire 8 Conference meet at Webster Aquatic Center with a school-record time of :20.40. That was fast enough for him to become the Golden Flyers' first-ever male swimming qualifier for the NCAA Championships. The meet is March 21-24 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

"This is an exciting development for Seth and for the Nazareth swimming and diving program," said Nazareth's second-year coach Scott Whitbeck. "Seth has excelled for us all season and peaked at the E8 meet."

The Golden Flyers enjoyed, perhaps, their best season ever in men's swimming and diving as they finished 8-0 in dual meets and had their highest finish (second) at the Empire 8 Conference meet. In the midst of an honor-laden season, Farrand was named Swimmer of the Meet and Rookie of the Meet at the E8 Championships, in which Nazareth broke 12 school records. In addition to shattering the school record in the 50 freestyle, Farrand set a new standard in the 100 freestyle (:45.75) and won the 100 backstroke in :51.10. He also swam on four of Nazareth's five record-breaking relays: the 200 free relay (1:24.34), the 400 free relay (3:07.78), the 200 medley relay (1:33.16) and the 400 medley relay (3:26.15). He likely will swim in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke at the national meet.
