Five Players Named D3hoops.com All-East Region
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – D3hoops.com announced its all-region men's basketball teams for the 2017-18 season and the Empire 8 had five student-athletes earn recognition in the
East Region.
Nazareth College senior
Tyler Stenglein (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) highlights the list of honorees with a selection to the First Team.
Stenglein, the Empire 8 Player of the Year averaged 19.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists during his senior campaign to help the Golden Flyers earn the Empire 8 regular season championship. He later went on to be named the Most Valuable Player of the Empire 8 Championship as he helped the Golden Flyers defeat Utica in the title game, 66-64, including draining the game-winning layup with :03 seconds remaining.
For the season, Stenglein scored in double figures in 23-of-26 games, while scoring a career-high 35 points on January 19.
Utica senior Ivan Iton
(Ossining, NY/Ossining) was named to the Second Team.
Iton, who was also named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, finished the year ranked seventh in the Conference with an average of 16.1 points per game. He led the league with an average of 9.7 rebounds per game and ranked 14th nationally with an average of 2.5 blocks per game. He will graduate ranked fifth on the College's all-time scoring list with 1,286 career points. He also ranks second all-time at UC with 160 career blocks and third all-time with 804 career rebounds.
Nazareth junior
Jake Burgio (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Stevens Institute of Technology sophomore
Spencer Cook (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) were named to third team.
Burgio has served as a strong front-court presence for the Golden Flyers in 2017-18 as he ranked among the E8 leaders in scoring (16.1 ppg.), rebounding (8.8 rpg.) and field goal percentage (183-for-321, .570). He scored in double digits 24 times and reached double digits in rebounds 11 times. He produced double-doubles (points-rebounds) ten times.
At 17.6 points per game, Cook was the only Stevens player to average double digits per game. He also cracked the 100-rebound barrier this year with 104. He handed out 46 assists, had 21 steals and two blocks while shooting .488 from the floor, including 57 threes.
Hartwick freshman guard
Kevin Townes (Lagrangeville, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) was selected as the East Region Rookie of the Year.
The award marks the third time a Hawk has been named the top rookie in the region. Jared Suderley earned the award in 2011 followed by Joey Lufkin in 2014. Townes is now eligible for National Rookie of the Year, which will be announced at the end of this week, in conjunction with the NCAA Division III Men's Championships.
The Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, Townes led Hartwick in scoring and rebounding with averages of 16.7 points and 6.7 boards per game. He also paced the Hawks in field goals (117), free throws (110), free-throw percentage (.873), steals (29), and he was tied for a team-best 57 three-pointers. Townes registered four double-doubles and reached double figures in points 18 times. He scored 20 points or more nine times, which includes a season-best 30 points against Skidmore in just his second collegiate game.
