The Empire 8 Athletic Conference has announced that 10 student-athletes in six different sports have been recognized for outstanding play during the week of March 12-18, 2018....
Baseball Player – Houghton
Ben Closson, Junior, Catcher – Lancaster, NY/Lancaster
Ben Closson went 5-for-9 with a double, a triple, a homerun, four runs scored and eight RBI's in a doubleheader sweep of Medaille. He also threw out two-of-three potential base stealers from behind the dish.
Baseball Pitcher– Stevens
Chandler Brierley, Sophomore – Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood
Chandler Brierley pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball in his first career start in Stevens' 11-4 victory over Middlebury. Brierley didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and finished with nine strikeouts. Over three appearances, the Ridgewood, New Jersey native allowed just two hits over 8 2-3 innings and struck out 12.
Softball Player– Utica
Sabrina Stransky, Senior, IF – Miller Place, NY/Miller Place
Senior Sabrina Stransky batted .500 (14-for-28) with five home runs, including two grand slams, as Utica went 4-4 at the Sunkissed Classic in Kissimmee, FL last week. Stransky also had four doubles and a team-high 18 RBIs last week.
Softball Pitcher– Utica
Gabby Caccamo, Freshman – Suffern, NY/Suffern
Freshman Gabby Caccamo led Utica with a 3.72 ERA in eight appearances last week. She picked up her first two wins of the season over NYU and Wisconsin Lutheran.
Men’s Lacrosse Player – Stevens
Tommy Dawson, Senior, Attack – Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry
Tommy Dawson posted consecutive four-goal outings for No. 17 Stevens as the Ducks topped both Skidmore and Haverford. In a homecoming game for the senior attackman, Dawson recorded four goals and three assists, while causing one turnover and picking up one groundball as the Ducks topped Skidmore 16-9 in a game played at Cape Henry High School. Against Haverford, the Virginia Beach, Virginia native picked up four goals and an assist as the Ducks scored 13 unanswered goals to top the Fords, 18-5.
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie – Utica
Ryan Boshart, Freshman – Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius
In Saturday’s 10-7 win against Alvernia University, freshman goalie Ryan Boshart made his collegiate debut in goal and picked up his first career win. Boshart allowed seven goals and made 28 saves in the win.
Women’s Lacrosse Player – Hartwick
Ashley Werner, Attack – Saugerties, NY/Saugerties
Ashley Werner scored 12 goals in two victories for the Hawks this week. She tallied seven times in a 17-12 victory over Morrisville State on Thursday and wrapped up her week with five goals in a 16-13 win over St. Joseph's LI on Saturday.
Women’s Lacrosse Goalie – Utica
Hali Vandermeulen, Sophomore – Walden, NY/Valley Central
In Tuesday’s 17-5 win over Albright College, sophomore goalie Hali Vandermeulen picked up her second win of the season. Vandermeulen allowed five goals and made nine saves on 29 shots faced.
Men’s Tennis Player – Stevens
Danny Polk, Senior – Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover
Danny Polk went 2-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles last week as the Ducks faced Ithaca, RPI and No. 22 Kenyon. He opened the week with a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles and an 8-5 win in first doubles in the match against Ithaca on Monday. The next day he was one of two Ducks to win his singles match against RPI. Polk played at second singles and after dropping the first set he came back to win 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Men’s Volleyball Player & Rookie – Sage
Scott Sanders, Sophomore, MH – Los Angeles, CA/Taft
Scott Sanders had a banner week as Sage faced two Top 10 ranked teams. Sanders totaled 17 kills on 26 attacks with just two errors (.577 attack percentage) as the Gators battled No. 2 Stevens and No. 10 NYU in a pair of matches. He finished with nine kills against the Ducks and registered eight kills against NYU for a 2.43 kills per set average.
