INDIANAPOLIS -- Seth Farrand finished in 22nd place Wednesday in the 50-yard freestyle, but failed to reach the finals of the event at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatroium.
Farrand's time of :20.64 was a couple of ticks slower than his previous best of :20.40. Farrand was one of 53 swimmers to compete in the 50 free and swam in the seventh and final heat Wednesday morning, He was in the same race as the two-time defending champion, Oliver Smith of Emory, who set a national record with a prelim time of :19.37 and is the favorite heading into Wednesday evening's final.
Farrand, a freshman, has two more events to swim this week. He'll return for the 100-yard backstroke Friday and the 100-yard freestyle Saturday.
