No. 23 Stevens Downs No.15 Cortland In Final Seconds

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No 23 ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team took down No. 15 ranked SUNY Cortland in the final seconds at Growney Stadium Friday afternoon by a score of 8-7. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-1 overall in 2018, while the Red Dragons fall to 5-2 overall on the year.
 
Mallory Eymer came out the hero for Fisher as the sophomore scored a hat-trick in the game, including the game winning goal with only 18 seconds remaining in the second half.
 
Cortland was the first team on the scoreboard in the first half, tallying their first goal just 38 seconds into the game. Claire Bollin notched her sixth of the season at the 26:16 mark to tie the game back up at one.
 
The Red Dragons followed up with a four goal run that pushed their lead to 5-1 with 8:53 remaining in the first 30 minutes. Morgan Young ended the Cardinal drought and put her fifth of the season past the goalkeeper to cut the Cortland lead to three. The Red Dragons were able to push their lead back to four however with a late goal before the halftime horn sounded.
 
To start the second half, it was the Cardinals this time being able to gain the momentum and have a four goal scoring run of their own. Eymer scored her first of the game just 48 seconds into the second 30 minutes. Kelsie Schindler followed up with a goal of her own from behind the cage at the 20:14 minute mark for her eighth of the season.
 
With 15:12 on the clock, it was Eymer again scoring for Fisher as she took on a Cortland defender and was able to make her way to the top of the crease to put the Cardinals within one. Jenna Lipper tied the game up for Fisher at 6-6, with her first goal of the season off of a beautiful pass from Maria Hristodoulou across the offensive zone.
 
Cortland was able to take the lead back two minutes later, however it was short lived. Bollin scored her second of the game at the 5:40 mark to bring the game back to a 7-7 deadlock.
 
Both teams provided entertaining back-and-forth action for the final five minutes of the contest. Finally, Eymer was able to break the tie with 18 seconds remaining, maneuvering past a couple Cortland defenders in route to scoring her hat-trick goal.
 
Goalkeeper Molly Maguire was credited with the victory improving her season record to 3-1, after the senior made many clutch saves throughout the second half, finishing the game with 10 saves. Defensively for Fisher, Hayley Maguire and Erin Mills led the way with each tallying three ground balls, as well as three and two caused turnovers respectively.
 
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday when the team hosts Hartwick College for an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Growney Stadium scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
