Read Across America, also known as Dr. Seuss week, is a week full of fun themes that helps to promote and encourage reading for every child in every community. Throughout the week Pre-K through 6th-grade students from a local school, Genesee Valley Central, participated in the annual reading motivation and awareness program.

Houghton Athletics, along with other volunteers in the community, partnered with Genesee Valley Central in this week's annual celebration. Eight student-athletes from various sports along with Luckey the Highlander Lion volunteered their time reading to students.

"Having the opportunity to bring a group of student-athletes into a classroom is an experience that both parties benefit from. Student-athletes don't always think about the impact they have on young people's lives, it could be as simple as giving an elementary student a 'high-five' or just listening to their stories, but it's a lasting memory for both who take part and could be a 'life-changing' to those involved."
