Thayer's Throws No-Hitter against Cortland
PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior pitcher
Lindsey Thayer threw a no-hitter as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team allowed just three hits in 14 innings and took both ends of a doubleheader against SUNY Cortland on Tuesday afternoon at the Softball Complex. With the wins, Fisher, which is ranked 11th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, won its sixth straight game and improved to 14-6 on the year. Cortland fell to 10-11 with the sweep.
FISHER 5, CORTLAND 2
The Cardinals flexed their muscles in the opening game with all five runs coming by way of the long ball. After escaping a bases loaded jam and holding the Red Dragons to a single run, Fisher jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second with three runs on two hits.
Ashley Prince drew a walk before
Mary Claire Grosvenor singled up the middle to put two on with one out.
Maddie Klidonas stepped in and smacked a three-run shot to center for her first career home run.
After a scoreless third inning, Fisher went back to work in the bottom of the fourth as
Sarah Kubik and Prince lifted back-to-back jacks to make it 5-2 in the Cardinals' favor.
Five runs proved enough as
Monica Moses (4-2) nailed down her fourth win of the season inside the circle after throwing seven strong innings. Moses allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits as the senior tallied eight strikeouts on the day.
FISHER 3, CORTLAND 0
The Cardinals were even better in the nightcap as Thayer was nearly untouchable. The Winthrop native did not allow a hit and had just three hitters reach overall. Thayer moved to 9-3 on the season with the win and improved her strikeout total after notching 11 Ks.
Thayer, who has been named All-American in each of her seasons in a Cardinals' uniform, has been a part of two no-hitters this season after teaming up with Moses on March 28th for 11 no-hit innings against the University of Rochester.
Last season, Thayer tallied three no-hitters in all including a perfect game against Alfred. Her last no-no of the 2017 season came when the lights were brightest as she did not allow a hit to Williams in the opening game of the Division III World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Cardinals came away with the only run they would need in the second inning when
Emma Savas slapped a single through the right side to plate Grosvenor who had reached on an error earlier in the frame.
Fisher struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Emily Trotman led off with a double to left and came around to score when
Sammie Torlish lined a base hit up the middle to make it a two-run affair.
In the sixth inning, the Cardinals added an insurance run with Trotman singling home
Sam Schermerhorn to give the Cardinals the 3-0 edge.
