Fisher Captures Eighth Straight Empire 8 Championship

HERSHEY, Pa. – The St. John Fisher College men's golf team won the Empire 8 Conference Championship for the eighth straight year on Sunday, April 15 at the Hershey Golf Country Club in Pennsylvania. The Cardinals, who had three golfers finish in the top four and have now won 15 Empire 8 titles overall, will receive the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship, which is slated to begin on May 15 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
The Cardinals shot a combined 332 in Sunday's final round to finish with a four-round total of 1221 (+77), defeating runner-up SUNY Oswego, who closed out with a final score of 1292 (+109). Stevens Institute of Technology finished in third place at 1293 (+110).
Sunday's weather was a challenge as student-athletes battled windshill temperatures of 31 degrees and rain falling all day.
Fisher junior
Nick Calabrese shot an 82 on Sunday, finishing with a four-round total of 295 (71-69-73-82). Calabrese was named the Empire 8 Player of the Year, marking the 12th time a Fisher athlete has earned the honor.
Fisher's
Colin McGaugh and
Chris Thompson joined Calabrase on the All-Conference First Team while
Andrew Fedele earned a spot on the Second Team.
McGaugh, who tied for second place on the overall leaderboard, turned in an 85 on the final round to finish
with a four-round total of 310. Thompson finished the spring championship in fourth place over the final 36 holes. He place fifth overall on the individual leaderboard for those that played all 72-holes (320).
Fedele who was named Second-Team All-Conference following his performance over the weekend. Fedele posted a four-round mark of +36 after wrapping up the fall tournament at three-over-par.
Utica's
Josh Kienz was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. The freshman finished the tournament with a 314 (72-82-80-80). Kienz turned in the low card of the final round with a nine-over par 80 that included one birdie and nine pars.
Junior
Jack Doherty was the top finisher for Stevens and earned First Team All-Empire 8 Conference honors. Freshman
Vincent Cortese was Stevens' second-best finisher and was named to the league's Second Team.
Doherty finished with rounds of 72-73-79-86 to tied for second place overall at 310. Cortese tied for ninth with a 326 (83-77-79-87).
SUNY Oswego had two second-team All-Conference honorees with
Erik Schleicher finishinh seventh overall with a 324 and
Corey Marshall tying for ninth with a 326.
Nazareth's
Andrew Fleischman shot a 325 final score after all four rounds (76-78-80-91) to earn second-team all-conference honors.
