HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 28, 2018) – Senior Cami Santor set a new program record with 11 points, sophomore Emily Shanklin also set a program record with 16 draw controls as No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology Women's Lacrosse defeated Houghton College 23-3 Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Santor paced the team with six goals and five assists to five, and broke the previous record of 10, reached on nine different occasions, and most recently by Kara Rafferty against Houghton on April 24, 2014. The Glastonbury, Connecticut native fell just short of the Empire 8 record of 13 points, set by Chandler Jones on March 25, 2015. Santor is third in the conference with 4.25 points per game and second in assists per game (2.25). The 11-point performance is tied for the eighth-most in any Division III game this season.
A force on the draw all season, Shanklin, who ranks second in the Empire 8 with five draw controls per game, won an impressive 12 of Stevens' first half draws, and shattered the previous record of 12, set by Hall of Famer
Christine Smith against Hartwick on April 6, 2010. The Berkley, Michigan product fell one shy of an Empire 8 record and the 16 draws are tied for the second-most in a Division III game this season.
Sophomores Hannah Condren and Kyra Bednarski each totaled seven points on the day as seven different players found the scoresheet for the Ducks, who won their second consecutive contest to improve to 13-4 on the year. The Ducks concluded Empire 8 play with a perfect 8-0 mark.
Cori Beck scored twice for Houghton, who dropped its second straight to fall to 5-9 on the year and 3-5 in the Empire 8. The Highlanders did not qualify for the conference tournament.
Prior to the contest, the Women's Lacrosse Class of 2018: Julianna Ricci, Bridget Reed, Victoria Alvarez, Stephanie Schnelzer and Cami Santor, were recognized for their career achievements in a pre-game ceremony.
"This is a group of senior that has gotten better every year," said head coach
Celine Cunningham. "I'm so happy to see them conclude their Lacrosse careers on such a high note. They have set an amazing example for the rest of the team. They have certainly left their mark on the program and I am extremely proud of each one of them and I very fortunate to have the opportunity to coach them for a few more games."
Stevens outshot Houghton 34-9 on the day, including a 26-7 edge in shots on goal. Schnelzer made a pair of saves to earn the victory. Freshman Peyton Taylor came on in the second half, also making two saves. Sarah Olandt made three saves for the Highlanders.
Behind Shanklin, the Ducks held a 19-8 edge in draw controls and Stevens went a remarkable 10-for-11 on clear attempts. Houghton, who committed eight turnovers on the day, was successful on six of its eight clear attempts. Each team was awarded two free-position shots with Condren finding the back of the net on a first-half attempt. Taylor snagged both of Houghton's free-position shots. Junior Regan Littell picked up two ground balls to help Stevens gain a 10-6 advantage in the statistical category.
Santor opened the scoring on the first possession of the game. Shanklin earned the opening draw control leading to a Condren shot that ricocheted off the post. The Ducks maintained their possession and Santor beat Olandt with a great deke for her 28th of the season just 99 seconds into the game. The Ducks would go on to score 13 unanswered goals before Houghton broke through on Beck's 20th of the year. Shanklin returned the offensive momentum to Stevens scoring her 32nd of the year. Santor put on a one-woman show before halftime, scoring three times in a 5:20 span to give Stevens a 17-1 advantage heading into the intermission. Santor's final tally of the stretch came with just two seconds remaining in the opening half.
The teams alternated goals to open the second half, before the Ducks scored the final four goals of the game to provide the day's final margin. Freshman Haley Hanrahan scored her eighth of the year for the final score of the afternoon.
Up Next: No. 24 Women's Lacrosse opens the Empire 8 Conference Tournament Saturday with a matchup with No. 4 seed Utica College. The Ducks downed the Pioneers 16-8 earlier this season in Hoboken. It will be the first time since the 2011 season that the road to the NCAA Tournament goes through Hoboken.
