HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 4, 2018) – Stevens Institute of Technology baseball junior Charlie Ruegger was named Division III National Pitcher of the Week Wednesday, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced. It's the first NCBWA weekly honor in program history. Ruegger was named Empire 8 Conference Pitcher of the Week and selected to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week earlier this week.
"Very deserving honor for Chuck," said head coach
Kristaps Aldins. "He continues to give us quality outings time after time."
Ruegger struck out 15 in a one-hit, complete-game shutout as Stevens defeated the State University of New York at Canton 3-0 on March 30. The Morris Plains, New Jersey native allowed an infield single in the third and retired the last 20 batters he faced. The right-hander didn't walk a batter and only one ball left the infield. Ruegger has struck out at least seven in every start this season and his 48 strikeouts are second in the conference and 40th in the country. The 15-strikeout performance is tied for the fifth-most in a Division III game this season.
As a team, Stevens has pitched to a 3.79 ERA, good for second in the conference. Duck pitching has struck out 214 batters in 187 2-3 innings and are holding opponents to a conference-low .235 average. The Ducks are 13th in the country in strikeouts per nine innings (10.3).
