Medford, MA – Nazareth's historic women's tennis season came to a close in the First Round on the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday morning, as the Golden Flyers fell 5-2 to Rhode Island College on the campus of Tufts University.  Junior Marisa Joyce was a part of both points for Nazareth, winning her fourth singles match 6-3, 6-1 and pairing with Jackie Lisak to scoop up second doubles, 8-2.  Rhode Island College advances to the Second Round and will face off against Tufts University on Saturday.

The Golden Flyers were making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 1996-97 season and first-ever under head coach Paul Waida.  Nazareth earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament after downing Stevens, 5-4, to win the Empire 8 Championship back in the fall.

An injury to first singles player Allison Friends pushed everyone up a spot in singles play. Elizabeth Karstedt had a tight unfinished match in the second spot (5-7, 1-2), while Jackie Lisak opened with a 6-3 win at third singles and trailed 2-1 in the second when the Anchormen secured the match.

Aliana Burgos (0-6, 0-6) and Elena Alteri (0-6, 2-6), fell in the fifth and sixth singles spots, respectively.

Erin Schantz and Maelah Nadeau dropped first doubles, 8-4, while Karstedt and Maeve Morgan came up short in the third spot, 8-2.

Nazareth finishes the season 14-5 overall, the most wins in program history since 1995-96.
