Fisher in Tie for Fifth Place at NCAA Championship After Rain Halts Opening Round
ROUND ONE RESULTS
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The St. John Fisher College men's golf team wrapped up an abbreviated opening round on Tuesday in a two-way tie for fifth place at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship at Grandover Resort after rain forced play to be suspended. Fisher, which currently sits at +6 and is playing the par-72 West Course, will complete its first round beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning with the second round set to tee off at 11 a.m.
Guilford College and Emory, which were both able to complete their rounds, lead the field at -5.
Andrew Fedele got off to a hot start after the junior recorded birdies on the first and third holes. Fedele went on to par the next three holes before finishing the front nine at even par. After making the turn, he double bogeyed the par-four 10th before bouncing back with a birdie on the par-three 11th to close out his round at +1.
Colin McGaugh also had it going to begin his championship round. After bogeying the first hole, he eagled the par-5 second hole before recording a string of four straight pars to make the turn at even par. McGaugh went par, bogey on 10 and 11, respectively, to finish the day at one-over with seven holes left to finish.
Nicholas Calabrese shot even par on the front with seven pars before shooting two-over through the first two holes on the back nine while
Christopher Thompson also recorded an eagle on the front to make the turn at two-over- par before birdying the 170-yard par three 11th to close out the suspended round at two-over par through 12 holes.
UPDATE: The Cardinals resumed their opening round early Wednesday morning and didn't miss a beat as Fisher finished its round tied for fifth place with Methodist University at six-over, 294.
McGaugh bettered his score over his final seven holes after posting back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to conclude the round tied for 18th place at even par.
Fedele carried his momentum to the back nine as well with a par of birdies to end the round at even par while Thompson was one-under on the back to wrap up the opening round at one-over - good for a tie for 31st place.
