Buyan named to Google Cloud Academic All-District At-Large team

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Washington & Jefferson College junior field hockey defender Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) earned a spot on the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® 4 Women's At-Large Team, named by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
Buyan holds a 3.77 GPA as an Accounting major who has been recognized as a Beta Scholar at W&J (cumulative GPA between 3.70-3.85) five times, while also being a five-time Dean's List honoree. A member of Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honorary as well as the Washington Fellows Honors program, Buyan has also served as the correspondence secretary for Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and completed two accounting internships. She has also been recognized twice on the Empire 8 President's List, the ECAC President's Honor Roll and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-Academic Team.
 
On the field, the junior is a two-time NFHCA All-Region performer, including a first-team nod this season. Buyan landed on the All-ECAC and Empire 8 First Teams and was the MVP of the 2017 Empire 8 Tournament, which she helped lead the Presidents to the title in at Cameron Stadium with three goals and two assists in two games. This year, the California native led the Presidents and ranked fifth in the E8 with 12 goals and 29 points, while scoring four game-winning goals.
 
Through three years on the field hockey team, Buyan ranks fourth on W&J's career goals list (33), tied for 10th on the assists leaderboard (15) and fifth among point scorers (81). Buyan's consistent offensive performance earned her E8 Offensive Player of the Week honors twice this year.
 
To be eligible for the award, voted on by Sports Information Directors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.30 GPA or higher and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic and academic credentials.
 
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with Google Cloud Academic All-America® honorees to be announced in June. The At-Large teams represent student-athletes on all sports that do not have separate awards, including: beach volleyball, lacrosse, bowling, rifle, crew, skiing, fencing, swimming, field hockey, tennis, golf, gymnastics, water polo and ice hockey.
 
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.
 
The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams.
