Ithaca Ends Season with 3-1 Loss to Wabash in Adrian Regional
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Ithaca College baseball team finished the 2018 season with a 30-17 overall record as the Bombers dropped a 3-1 decision to Wabash College on Sunday afternoon at Nicolay Field in the NCAA Adrian Regional. IC managed to produce just one hit in the loss and finished fourth in the Mideast Regional.
The 30 victories mark the 13th time in which an Ithaca baseball team has reached that win plateau. It also extends the Bombers' consecutive winning seasons to 77 straight years.
The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI groundout by freshman
Jack Lynch that plated junior
Sam Little from third. IC quickly loaded the bases in the frame with walks to S. Little and freshman
Garrett Callaghan, as well as a hit by pitch to junior
Matt Carey.
After the RBI groundout and a strikeout, sophomore
Andrew Wollner walked to load the bases once again. Wabash went to the bullpen, and before throwing a pitch, the Little Giants pitcher picked Carey off at third to end the inning.
Wabash tied the game in the bottom half of the second with a sacrifice fly and then took the lead at 2-1 in the third on another sac fly. The run in the second scored after a leadoff single, error and sac bunt. In the third, two walks and a hit batter set the Little Giants up with another run.
The Little Giants tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a base hit down the left field line, which allowed a runner to score from second base on a hit-and-run. That runner found his way on with a walk and moved into scoring position on a single by the next batter.
Ithaca had one final crack at tying the game in the top of the ninth inning as Callaghan and Lynch reached base with one out, but a strikeout and pop out ended the game for IC.
Senior
Tyler Hill kept the Bombers within striking distance all afternoon as he tossed 5.2 innings out of the bullpen. Hill entered in the third inning with the bases loaded and one out, and managed to limit the damage with just one run allowed on the sac fly. He finished the game with four strikeouts and five hits surrendered.
Hill tossed 12 innings in the regional and allowed just one run on 10 hits with eight strikeouts.
Sophomore
Trevor Rumsey took the loss in 2.1 innings of work. Rumsey gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits with a pair of walks.
Junior
Jake Generali had the lone hit for Ithaca.
