WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Elmira College Men's Lacrosse Alumni Association is raising funds and bringing together former Soaring Eagles to help support Shootout for Soldiers, a 501(c)(3) charity that aims to use the sport of lacrosse as a platform to assist our nation's veterans and foster community engagement.
While Shootout for Soldiers has events scheduled across the nation, EC will be participating in the Washington, D.C., festivities. On Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Virginia, teams and participants will compete in 24 consecutive one-hour games that are designed to bring the community together to support American veterans. Among the teams playing in the friendly around-the-clock contest will be a squad of veterans and a unit of active duty military members. In addition to the fun on the field, the event will feature music, food, and activities beyond lacrosse. Since its inception, Shootout for Soldiers has raised over $2.5 million, and last year's events had a combined attendance of over 75,000.
Soaring Eagles for Soldiers, a group organized by EC men's lacrosse alumni Matthew Hayes '02, Joe Gemmell '04, and Skyler Pradelski '16, is currently raising money for the charitable tournament, and as of Thursday, May 24, was well within reach of its initial goal. With $6,516 collected thus far, the current and former Elmira student-athletes lead all teams registered for the Washington, D.C., event, while Hayes ranks atop of the leaderboards as the top individual fundraiser. Thanks to the efforts of Soaring Eagles for Soldiers, the Washington, D.C., area fundraisers are almost halfway to their goal of $50,000 with a month remaining. On May 12, the charity selected the Elmira alumni as its national Team of the Week in recognition of their outstanding effort.
