PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked and top-seeded St. John Fisher College softball team downed fourth-seeded Alfred University, 2-0, on Friday at the Softball Complex behind senior pitcher Lindsey Thayer's 100th career win as the Cardinals, who are ranked sixth in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, improved to 28-7 overall.  Alfred fell to 21-18 and will play at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday against second-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology, which fell to third-seeded Utica College, 2-1, earlier on Friday.

Thayer, who notched her 18th win of the season on Friday, was brilliant as the Winthrop native did not surrender a run over seven innings of work.  Thayer gave up just one hit and finished the day with seven strikeouts. As of today, she sits just 17 Ks away from breaking the all-time Division III record for career punchouts.

Fisher took the lead in the bottom of the first on the strength of just one hit and never looked back as Sarah Kubik drove in Katie Mazierski who had led off the inning with a walk.

After setting the side down in order in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals added an insurance run in the home half of the frame as Emma Savas scored on an errant throw by the Saxons' catcher to make it 2-0.

In all, Fisher tallied six hits with Mary Claire Grosvenor, the reigning Empire 8 Player of the Week belting a double in the win.  Kubik, Sammie Torlish, Emily Trotman, Savas and Marissa Kirker rounded out the offense for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will square off with third-seeded Utica College at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning with the winner advancing to the title game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.  Fisher and Utica met last weekend with the Cardinals sweeping after outscoring the Pioneers, 12-2.
