D3baseball.com Includes Bawiec and Detweiler on National Team of the Week
D3baseball.com Release
Less than 24 hours after being named the Empire 8 Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, Elmira College's Conor Bawiec and Stevens Institute of Technology's Alex Detweiler were recognized by D3baseball.com as part of the online publication's National Team of the Week.
The senior utility man made the final start of his collegiate season on Saturday, May 5, and tossed a gem in an 8-0 win over Medaille College in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader. Bawiec lasted all 7.0 innings on the mound and scattered five hits with no walks on 105 pitches. The 6-foot-4-inch righty tied a season-high with nine strikeouts in the victory and twice recorded all three outs in an inning on strikes.
Bawiec carved through back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the fifth and sixth, before striking out two more in the seventh. He picked up his ninth punch out on a called strike three to end the contest. It marked his second consecutive complete game and his third of the season, while the victory is just the second complete-game shutout in the team's four-year history.
Detweiler went 6-for-8 (0.750) as Stevens defeated Scranton and St. John Fisher during the review period. The slugging first baseman walked twice, collected four doubles, drove in four and scored five runs as the Ducks totaled 24 runs over the two games. Detweiler leads the team in batting average, runs scored, hits, RBI, doubles, home runs and total bases.
