O’Brien Earns Two AVCA Sports Information Honors
Jonathan McCue
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (June 22, 2018) – Assistant director of athletic communications
Charles O'Brien of Stevens Institute of Technology - who is the primary contact for both the men's and women's volleyball programs on Castle Point - was awarded a pair of American Volleyball Coaches Association Sports Information Honors for his work with both programs this year.
The Duck men went all the way to the NCAA Division III National Championship Match this year, finishing No. 2 in the nation.
Stevens won the regular season United Volleyball Conference Championship, and with Canavan Arena unavailable, O'Brien was instrumental in efforts to host the six-team event across the Hudson River in New York City. The Ducks went on to claim the UVC Tournament title there as well.
O'Brien and the events staff also hosted two men's NCAA playoff rounds this season.
The Stevens women hosted and won the Empire 8 Championship on their home floor after a perfect conference season, and advanced to the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship out of the New York Region. The Ducks received seven votes in the final AVCA Coaches Poll.
"Charles is a fantastic colleague and he is most deserving of this honor," said assistant AD for communication and events
Jon McCue. "He brings a depth of knowledge and a passion for the job that is always evident in his work, and I can count on him to be unfailingly professional. I would like to thank him for teaching me so much in my first season back at Stevens."
Criteria for the awards include: Athletic media relations contacts at an institution or conference level for universities and colleges, provide volleyball content to the public through the written word (online and/or print), and provide outstanding coverage of volleyball via social media.
