Over $4400 Raised for Special Olympics
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs) from the Empire 8 Athletic Conference (E8) and Liberty League raised $4,457.23 in its third annual 'Change War' competition to benefit Special Olympics.
The two leagues took part in the friendly, spirited fundraising competition during NCAA Division III Week, ran from Monday, April 2 through Sunday, April 8. During the week, every Division III school and conference office is encouraged to conduct a type of outreach activity that falls into one of three categories: academic accomplishment; athletic experience; or leadership/community service/campus involvement.
"What better time of year than Division III Week to conduct a community service project that benefits other athletes," said Empire 8 Associate Commissioner Janelle Zera.
The Liberty League SAAC outraised the E8 SAAC for the third straight year but being able to donate to Special Olympics and benefit Special Olympians is the biggest accomplishment.
"Collectively we raised more than $4,400 for Special Olympics – which is nearly $1,000 more than last year," said Liberty League Commissioner Tracy King. "It's a collaborative effort and every little bit helps."
In three years the leagues have combined to raise $11,490.33.
Since 2011, Special Olympics and NCAA Division III schools have been connected through a partnership designed to foster a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes. Through this partnership, Division III student-athletes across the country are encouraged to participate in existing Special Olympics events, create their own events, or otherwise serve to support Special Olympics organization.
