GENESEO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team defeated the SUNY Geneseo Knights on Wednesday evening in their first overtime game of the season by a score of 2-1. Kelly Bergamo was able to sweep a shot from five yards out past the Knights' goalkeeper in the second overtime period. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-1 overall on the year, while the Knights fall to 2-3 overall.

Both teams were held scoreless throughout the first half, however, senior goalkeeper Ashley Maynard, who was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, was busy in the first 35 minutes, making five saves to keep the score locked at 0-0.

The Cardinals managed four shots on net during the first half, however, were unable to find the back of the Knights' net. Three different Cardinals put shots on goal including Meagan McDonald, Alyssa Andres, and Bergamo.

Fisher got on the board in a hurry following the halftime break and scored its first goal of the game, when sophomore Bre Socker netted her fifth goal of the season just 47 seconds into the second half. The Cardinals held their one goal advantage for just over 22 minutes, until Geneseo knotted the game back up at one apiece at the 57:46 minute mark.

At the end of the second 35 minute period, the scoreboard continued to read 1-1, as the Cardinals and Knights headed into the first 10 minute overtime period. Much like the first half of the game, both teams were held scoreless with Fisher holding a 4-2 advantage in shots.

It only took two minutes and eight seconds into the second overtime period, for Bergamo to win the game for the Cardinals with her first goal of the 2018 season.  Fisher finished the game with seven shots on goal, while Maynard, who improved to 3-1 in goal, posted her second double-digit save outing of the season with 10 stops.

The Cardinals are back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, when they travel to New Paltz to take on the Hawks in another non-conference matchup.
