Buyan's goal with no time remaining pushes Presidents past Stevens, 1-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) scored with no time remaining following a penalty corner as the Presidents opened Empire 8 play with a 1-0 win against Stevens at Cameron Stadium.

The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team used four penalty corners in the final 3:04 to earn the victory. The final corner was called right as time expired in regulation and Buyan was able to control a scramble in front of the cage to poke the ball past the Ducks' goalie, Emily Franco.

W&J held a 7-5 lead on corners for the game with all seven occurring in the second half. The Presidents also led in shots by a 12-4 count behind an 8-2 second-half margin. Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) led all players with five shots, including four on goal, while Buyan tallied four shots (two on goal. Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) collected a pair of shots, while Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) added a shot on goal and defensive save.

Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) ran her scoreless streak to open the season to 280 minutes as she has yet to yield a goal in four matches. The sophomore made a career-best three saves in the win over Stevens.

The Presidents are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 18 with a 5 p.m. nonconference match at Denison in Granville, Ohio.
