HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 22, 2018)  – Sophomore Skylar Migliaccio snapped a 1-1 tie early in the second half powering the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Hartwick College Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference game at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Freshman Samantha Hessels recorded her first collegiate goal on a penalty stroke in the 20th minute for the Ducks, who won their second straight contest to improve to 5-3 on the year and 1-1 in conference games. It was Stevens' first win over Hartwick since the 2014 season.

Katie Meuse had the lone goal for the Hawks, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end. Hartwick came into the game as the leading offense in the Empire 8, but were held more two goals under its season average.

Freshman Emily Franco made a career-high 13 saves to earn the victory and lowered her goals against average to 1.226. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native is third in the E8 with 44 saves.

Turning Point
  • After a Hartwick foul, Migliaccio took the ensuing penalty corner and was the recipient of the play.
  • Junior Michaela Thompson received the ball near the top of the circle, where Migliaccio redirected the ball neatly into the cage for her fifth goal of the year.

Inside the Numbers
  • Hartwick held a 23-19 edge in shots, including a 15-9 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Aggressive play in the offensive third led to Stevens earning 12 penalty corners to just four for the Hawks.
  • The conference's leading scorer, Perry Willett, was held to just one assist, although the freshman led all players with seven shots.
  • Freshman Aryana Muscara recorded her second defensive save of the season, picking up Franco after the goalkeeper stopped a pair of Hartwick shots.
  • Junior Ireland Tawney sent all three of her shot attempts on goal.

Unsung Heroes
  • Entering the game, Willett was averaging 2.83 points per game, but a strong defensive effort largely kept the Huntington, Vermont native in check throughout the contest.

From the Sidelines
  • "Very proud of the effort today!"
  • "Despite a slow start, we were able to double down and secure the win against a strong Hartwick."
  • "We continued to fight for 70 minutes, which is something we've focused on."

Up Next
  • Field Hockey heads to Madison, N.J. for a non-conference contest at Drew University on Sept. 25.
  • Although the teams last met in 2016, the Ducks have won each of the last three meetings.
