AURORA, N.Y. -- A five-goal second-half performance paved the way for Elmira College field hockey's 6-0 road win over Wells College in non-league action on Tuesday night. Five different players scored goals for the Soaring Eagles, including second-year forward Janie Kempf '21, who paced the Purple and Gold with two tallies.
Diane LeRoy '19, Mae Dinh '19, Kelsie Aloi '21 and Matilda Kennedy-Butler '19 added goals for the Purple and Gold, while Emily Selbert '20 chipped in with a pair of assists. Leading the charge on defense was once again Tina O'Donnell '20, who made one save en route to her second win of the 2018 campaign.
Elmira controlled tonight's contest from start to finish with a smothering offensive attack that produced 26 shots. Just as impressive was EC's defense, which limited the Express to just four shot attempts. The Soaring Eagles also held a 20-1 advantage in shots on goal, as well as a whopping 13-2 lead in penalty corners.
Kempf scored her first of two goals at the 11:52 mark in the opening half, a tally that would eventually go into the books as this evening's game-winning goal. The tally from Kempf held up through the first half, as Elmira marched into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
The first half was tightly contested, as the Elmira women held a marginal advantage in shots, 9-3. However, the second half was certainly a one-sided affair with Elmira holding an 17-1 lead in shots. EC's lopsided advantage in shots yielded five goals from the sticks of five different Soaring Eagles.
Kempf opened the second stanza with her second strike of the evening at the 49:42 mark, a tally that brought her season goal total to three.
LeRoy padded the Elmira lead to 3-0 with a tally less than five minutes later, as she found the back of the cage off of a rebound at the 54:01 minute mark. For LeRoy, it was the first goal of her collegiate career.
A little over three minutes passed until EC made it a four-goal game, as Dinh tallied for the first time in her career. Dinh was able to score in a scrum in front of the net, after receiving a pass from Selbert.
Aloi scored EC's fifth goal of the night just 17 seconds after the Dinh tally. Aloi carried the ball over the arc, before burying a shot into the lower right corner for the score at 57:31 mark.
Rounding out the scoring for Elmira was senior Kennedy-Butler, who cashed in on a penalty corner opportunity at the 70-minute mark. Setting up the score was Selbert, who fed Kennedy-Butler on the left post, where she re-directed it into the back of the cage for the goal.
In Her Own Words…
"Overall, the team worked really well together tonight," said head coach Lauren Silva. "The first half was pretty evenly matched, but we put all of the pieces together in the second half, and every single player was working hard to generate and maintain offensive momentum. Our tenacity in and around the circle allowed us to be successful on offense tonight. Tonight's play helped us to build confidence as we prepare for Sage this weekend."
