Utica, NY – Freshman Colin McCarthy headed home the game-winner in double overtime to help lift the Utica College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against visiting Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences on Tuesday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Nicolas Diaz delivered the free kick into the box which was headed past Panther goalie Nathan Martens by McCarthy to hand the Pioneers the victory with just 5:20 left in double overtime.

The Pioneers snapped a two-game slide and improved to 3-5-1 overall on the year. UC returns to action on the road Saturday when it travels to Empire 8 Conference rival Nazareth College (1 p.m.).

Sophomore goalie Randy Miksch needed just one save to earn his first collegiate shut out in his first start in the blue and orange.

Utica outshot the visitors 26-2 on the day and undoubtedly took control in the second half, out shooting the Panthers 20-1 over the course of the final 60:20 of action. The Pioneers also earned a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Alex Purcell nearly put the game away midway through the first overtime when his header in front of the net ricocheted off the post and the game remained scoreless at 0-0.

Julian Fonseca led the Pioneers with eight shots on the afternoon, while Patrick Hynes added four shots of his own.

ACPHS goalie Nathan Martens kept the Panthers in the contest as he stopped nine shots on the evening. The Panthers record moved to 3-3 overall after Tuesday's loss.
