NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. -- Paced by a first-place individual finish by sophomore Deanna Tinch, Nazareth's women's golf team took the team title at the two-day Utica Invitational over the weekend.
Tinch posted rounds of 88 and 83 for the Golden Flyers to take home medalist honors at Yahnundasis Golf Club. Her 171 total was five strokes better than Utica's Kara O'Driscoll and eight strokes better than Canton's Cecelia Nealy, who had the lead Saturday after shooting 87.
Nazareth recorded team scores of 387 and 380 for a two-day total of 767. SUNY Canton finished a distant second with a total of 812. SUNY Delhi (887) and Utica (909) also competed.
Sophomore Sara McCall played well for Nazareth Sunday in carding a score of 90 -- 10 shots better than her first-round score -- to finish in seventh place. Junior Olivia Dowdle finished in eighth place with scores of 96 and 104 for a 200 total. Sophomore Gabriela Groman was 10th after back-to-back rounds of 103 for a 206 total. Freshman Keelin Paquette shot 109 and 108 for a 217 total and 12th place.
Nazareth's men's team also competed and finished in seventh place with a two-day score of 687. Utica claimed the men's team title with a 618 total, three shots better than runner-up SUNY Delhi.
Freshman Jake Costa rallied from a first-round 86 to shoot 79 Sunday to finish in a tie for 26th place with a 165 total. Junior Andrew Fleischman was next with rounds of 78 and 88 for a 166 total and a tie for 29th place.
Junior Ian Brotherton had rounds of 83 and 87 for a 170 total and sophomore Sean Kuhn had rounds of 96 and 90 for a 186 total.
