ONEONTA – The Alfred University women's tennis team (3-1, Empire 2-0) continued its winning streak on Saturday, defeating Empire 8 opponent Hartwick, 7-2, on the road.

The Saxons dominated the doubles play, taking a 3-0 lead out of the gate. Juniors Miranda Sakala (Olean, NY/Olean) and Amber Smith (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) walked through their #3 doubles match 8-0, giving AU the lead. Seniors Tori Pellegrino (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Inda Gillett (South Kortright, NY/Delaware Academy Central) piled on with an 8-6 win at #1 doubles.

The Hawks showed resistance at #2 doubles, but senior Nurila Kambar (Almaty, Kazahstan/Republic Physics and Mathematics School) and sophomore Lauren Boshart (Oswego, NY/Oswego) took home a win 9-7 to complete the doubles sweep.

Smith continued the AU success with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 singles before Kambar sealed the win with an identical score at #4 singles. AU continued dominating with another win at #6 singles by senior Rachel Pera (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) 7-5, 5-7, (10-2).

Hartwick won two matches back-to-back at #2 and #3 singles before Pellegrino earned the final point at #1 singles. Her match was a battle 6-4, 5-7, (11-9). AU took home its third win the young season, 7-2.

"This was a great match for our team," Head Coach Jordan Crouch. "Hartwick was a good test for us and we were ready to play today. After three great doubles wins we came out and worked harder in singles. Tori and Rachel [Pera] both won marathon three-set matches and I'm proud of not only their resilience, but the entire team's. I can't wait for another match."

The Saxons return home for a nonconference match against SUNY Fredonia on Monday, September 10 at 4PM.
