Golden Flyers knocks off SUNY Poly, Medaille at UR Invirational

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth continued its early-season success in women's volleyball Saturday as the Golden Flyers won two more matches at the UR Invitational. The Golden Flyers recorded a three-set sweep of SUNY Poly in the first match by scores of 25-19, 25-11, 26-24. After that, Nazareth defeated Medaille in four sets by scores of 25-11, 23-25, 25-20, 25-12.

Saturday's wins enabled the Golden Flyers to go 3-0 on the weekend and to improve to 7-0 overall.

Against SUNY Poly, senior Kelsey Milligan was named to the all-tournament team and had a match-high 11 kills to go with five blocks and sophomore setter Jessica Barry also made the all-tournament team and had 35 assists. Sophomore libero Savannah Bothner had 12 digs. Freshman McKenzie Hart served up four aces.

The Golden Flyers posted a hitting percentage of .250 (42-16-104) with Madison Joseph and Melissa Newcomb each contributing eight kills and Delaney Martin adding six.

Joseph had seven of her kills in the first set and Milligan had five to help Nazareth take an early lead. Milligan and Martin each had three kills in the second set.

Nazareth fell behind 11-4 in the third set before rallying. Still trailing 23-20, Nazareth got a combined block from Newcomb and Barry, then kills from Newcomb and Margorie Didas to tie the score at 23-23. After SUNY Poly regained the lead, Nazareth closed out the match on a kill by Bothner and a pair of service aces from Hart.

Against Medaille, Milligan pounded out 13 more kills and Bothner had 12 more digs Joseph and Martin each had seven kills and Celia Cordero contributed four service aces and eight digs. Barry had 20 assists. 

Three of Milligan's kills came in the first set and she had four each in sets three and four as Nazareth pulled away.

Nazareth is home next weekend to host the Golden Flyer Invitational.
