Men's Basketball
Player - Tyler Stenglein, Nazareth (Senior, Rochester, N.Y.)
Stenglein led Nazareth to a pair of conference wins over the weekend by averaging 24 points against Stevens and Sage. He scored a season-high 25 points with four assists and three steals as the Golden Flyers handed Stevens its first E8 defeat Friday evening. He added 23 points, six rebounds and three steals in Saturday's 82-78 win over Sage. He shot 18-26 (69%) from the field in the two games and was 9-for-13 from the foul line.
Rookie - Brewster Marshall, Alfred (Freshman, Horseheads, N.Y.)
Marshall helped the Saxons go 3-0 as he averaged 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds a game while shooting 65% from the floor and making 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. He scored a career high 16 points against Hartwick on Saturday as he hit 6-of-10 from the field. Earlier in the week, Marshall scored 13 points on the road in a win at Houghton. Marshall had five rebounds against Houghton, while pulling down seven in the games against Utica and Hartwick. He added two blocks against Hartwick and one steal against Houghton to cap off the undefeated week.
Women's Basketball
Player - Rachel Benedict, Nazareth (Junior, Brockport, N.Y.)
Benedict posted double-doubles for the Golden Flyers in a pair of Empire 8 home games over the weekend as Nazareth went 1-1. She had 26 points and 11 rebounds in an 83-78 overtime win over Stevens (only Nazareth's second-ever win over the Ducks). She also had 24 points and 15 rebounds in a 78-62 loss to Sage on Saturday. She shot 46% (17-for-37) from the field, including 8-for-16 from three-point range and went 8-for-10 from the foul line over the two games. It's the 2
nd consecutive week she's been recognized with this award from the league.
Rookie - Maggie Kirby, Hartwick (Freshman, Selkirk, N.Y.)
Kirby averaged 13.3 points, scoring at least 12 points in each game, and 6.3 rebounds as Hartwick went 3-0 and ascended to the top of the Empire 8 standings. On Tuesday in a 90-74 win over Stevens, she had 13 points and eight rebounds, also tying for the team-high with two steals. Scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting on Friday at Houghton, also grabbing four rebounds and a steal in the 78-67 victory. Kirby capped the week with a 12-point, seven-rebound, one-block performance in 70-47 win over Alfred on Saturday.
Swimming & Diving
Men's Athlete - Theodore Jagodits, Stevens (Sophomore, Poolesville, Md.)
Jagodits led Stevens on Saturday in their home meet against Worcester Polytechnic Institute with two individual wins and two second-place finishes. The Poolesville, Maryland native finished first in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle with times of 47.96 and 1:44.95, respectively. Jagodits also recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, coming in at 2:01.41. The sophomore swimmer was a member of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team that touched the wall just 11 milliseconds behind WPI.
Women's Athlete - Olivia Bart, Hartwick (Junior, Bristol, Conn.)
In tri-meet against Springfield and Union, Bart won both of her individual races and anchored both team relay victories. She took the 50-free by over a full second, in 24.87, as well as the 100-free by 1.4 seconds, touching up in 54.96. She swam the back leg of the 200-medley relay in 23.98, helping the Hawks to a time of 1:54.87, and helped Hartwick finish strong in the 400 free relay with a split of 54.34 and a team time of 3:46.34.
Indoor Track & Field
Men's Track Athlete - Tyler Sutton, Utica (Senior, Deerfield, N.Y.)
Sutton rolled to a first-place finish in the 400 meter dash in a time of 52.89 at the Pioneer Invitational. He also added a first-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, turning in an opening carry of 53.7 seconds to lead off the event for Utica's winning team.
Men's Field Athlete - Kyle Rollins, St. John Fisher (Sophomore, Groveland, N.Y.)
Rollins shined for St. John Fisher at the Spartan Invitational on Saturday, as the sophomore jumped a monstrous 2.10 meters to finish in first place overall and keep himself sitting comfortably at number one overall in the nation in the high jump event.
Women's Track Athlete - Tayler Dence, St. John Fisher (Junior, Hannibal, N.Y.)
Dence was the highlight of the day for the St. John Fisher women's track & field team as the junior set a new school record in the 200-meter dash event with a blistering time of 26.12 seconds, which was good for fifth overall of 92 total competitors on the day. Dance's time at the Spartan Invitational ranks her 16th in the national rankings.
Women's Field Athlete - Brittany Charlonne, Utica (Senior, Rutland, Mass.)
Charlonne turned in a big pentathalon performance that ultimately boosted Utica to a team win at the Pioneer Invitational. She scored 2581 points to take home first place. She put up a time of 10.32 in the 60 meter hurdles, a 1.36-meter leap in the high jump, 9.08 meters in the shot put, 4.76 meters in the long jump and a time of 2:47.09 in the 800-meter run. 653 points of her total came from a strong performance in the 60 meter hurdles.
