ROCHESTER, NY – Senior running back Aaron Griffin of the Alfred University football team was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Griffin, also named the Empire 8 co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, recorded the sixth-highest single-game rushing yard performance in Alfred football history, with 229 yards on 18 carries, while scoring three times, as the Saxons rolled to a 56-13 win over University of Rochester Saturday in the Saxons’ first home night game since 2002. Griffin scored on an 80-yard run in the opening quarter and added back-to-back 1-yard scores in the third quarter on his way to averaging 12.7 yards per touch. He also added three receptions for 38 yards.
A native of Queens, NY, Griffin leads the Empire 8 with 479 rushing yards on 63 carries (7.8 yards per carry) in 2019. His 80-yard touchdown run on Saturday night is the longest rush to date in the league this season. Griffin also has already surpassed his career-high for rushing yards in a season.
Griffin is the fifth different student-athlete from the Empire 8 to earn D3football.com Team of the Week accolades this season.
Empire 8 Football is off to a strong start in 2019, as SUNY Cortland is currently unbeaten and five teams have winning records. Conference play officially kicks off on Saturday, with Griffin and the Saxons hosting Morrisville State, SUNY Cortland hosting Utica and St. John Fisher hosting The College at Brockport in Courage Bowl XV.
