WASHINGTON, PA -- Two goals in the first 17 minute of play propelled the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey squad to its fifth-straight victory, 2-0 over The Sage Colleges in Empire 8 play on Saturday afternoon.
The victory is W&J's (7-4, 3-1 E8) fifth-consecutive win and is the fourth shutout in that span.
The Presidents began the afternoon the offensive, forcing four penalty corners and firing seven shots in the game's first three minutes.
Senior Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) swept a pass across the circle to Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor) who struck the ball into the cage for the game's first goal just 2:25 into the contest.
The Red and Black continued to press the advantage offensively, adding a pair of penalty corners and two shots following the early score but was unable to add to its lead.
In total the Presidents recorded nine shots and seven penalty corners in the first quarter while also holding the Gators without a shot or corner.
Early in the second quarter Fromm added to the Presidents' lead with her third goal of the season. With the ball loose inside the circle, Fromm gained possession along the left post and cashed in to hand the Presidents at 2-0 advantage in the game's 17
th minute.
W&J carried its 2-0 lead into halftime and neither team found a goal in the second half with W&J attempted two shots over the final 30 minutes and Sage recording one.
For the game W&J outshot Sage 15-2 and held a 9-0 edge in shots on goal. The Presidents held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Dunn led the way with six shots, all of which were on target, and a goal. Fromm matched a career-high with a three-point day for the third time in her career with a goal and an assist.
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and the W&J defense notched their third-straight shutout and second-straight without allowing a shot on goal.
W&J heads to Allegheny on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. for a non-conference matchup. The Presidents continue Empire 8 play next Saturday against Houghton at Cameron Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
