HOUGHTON, NY – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team took down Houghton College by a score of 6-1 at the Highlanders' Burke Field Monday evening. Junior Bre Socker scored a career-high four goals on the night to lead the Cardinals. Fisher's record improves to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8 conference. Houghton's record moves to 4-9 on the season with a 1-3 record in league play.
Goalie Kelly Bergamo was tested early with facing two shots in the first 75 seconds of the game. The senior stood tall though and stopped them both to keep the game scoreless. Five minutes later at the other end of the field on Fisher's first shot of the night, Socker scored to make it 1-0 Cardinals.
Just over five minutes into the second quarter, sophomore Gianna Palma beat several defenders through the middle and then deposited it into the back of the net to put Fisher up by two. A little over a minute later the Cardinals were awarded a penalty corner. Off the corner attempt, graduate student Meagan McDonald's shot was stopped by the Highlanders' keeper, however, junior Jess Snyder was there to bank in a rebound and increase the lead to 3-0.
Fisher was not finished with its scoring in the second quarter as Socker took control with a long shot that found the cage about two minutes after Snyder's score. With still a few minutes left in the half, senior Lindsay Scott set up Socker off a penalty corner and the junior netted her second-straight hat trick to give the Cardinals a five-goal advantage heading into halftime.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Houghton broke the shutout with a goal early on in the fourth. There was over a minute left on the clock when Socker got on a breakaway from near midfield, the Liverpool native would go on to beat the Houghton net minder to put the score at 6-1 while setting a new career-high for scores in a single game.
After Bergamo made the two early saves, Fisher's line of defense would not allow a single shot on goal until Houghton broke through to score in the fourth.
Socker now has seven goals in her last two games and 17 tallies in 2019.
The Cardinals have a busy week ahead as they play three games in five days starting on Wednesday when they host the College at Brockport at 7 p.m.
