ALBANY, NY – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team shattered three program records on Friday night as the Cardinals cruised to a 10-0 win over The Sage Colleges in an Empire 8 clash at the University of Albany's Alumni Field. With the win, Fisher, which has now won four straight games, improved to 11-3 overall and sits atop the Empire 8 standings at 4-0 while the Gators fell to 7-7, 0-3, respectively.
The Cardinals established a new record for goals in a single game as their 10 goals on Friday are the most the team has produced in a single game in its nine-year history. Fisher's previous high mark was nine goals, which it accomplished against Elmira and Sage. The team also eclipsed its previous mark for assists in a game with 10 helpers on the day while Fisher's 30 points was two more than its previous record of 28 that it set in 2016.
For the second time this week, junior Bre Socker scored four goals in a win as the Liverpool native had eight points overall after taking 12 shots in all including 10 on goal. She now has 12 goals in her last four games and 22 in 2019. Senior Lindsay Scott set an individual record with seven assists and nailed down another record after scoring a goal to finish the day with nine points in all. Sophomore Gianna Palma added two goals of her own while Meagan McDonald, Jess Snyder and Danila Casseri each found the back of the goal once on the day. Casseri also assisted on a pair of goals to finish with four points.
In goal, senior Kelly Bergamo played 45 minutes and made two saves before being lifted in favor of Lexi Kaplan who did not face a shot over the final 15 minutes of play.
The scoring onslaught began in just the third minute as Scott found Snyder to make it 1-0. Just 13 seconds into the second period, Fisher struck again as Palma took a feed from Scott to make it 2-0. Fisher struck again just 44 seconds later with Socker teaming up with Scott for a 3-0 edge heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Socker made it 4-0 with an unassisted tally before the junior struck again in the 34th minute off of a penalty corner. Ahead by five goals midway through the third quarter, Fisher continued to find the back of the net with Casseri and Palma each scoring to close out the third quarter.
Leading by seven goals and 15 minutes left to go, the Cardinals tacked on another goal in the 48th minute when Socker broke free an uncorked a shot to make it 8-0. As time ticked down, Snyder connected with Scott off of a corner to make it a nine-goal cushion before McDonald found the back of the cage in the 59th minute to cap off the scoring.
Fisher will look for its fifth straight win at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it travels to Vermont to take on the nation's top-ranked team and the reigning Division III national champion, Middlebury, in a non-conference bout.
