WASHINGTON, PA – For 80 minutes and five shoot-out rounds the Houghton Highlanders and Washington & Jefferson Presidents stood toe-to-toe in a draw. But in the first round of sudden-death strokes, Houghton's Sarah Olandt and Grace McBride lifted the Highlanders to victory.
In the best-of-five shootout, the Highlanders failed to convert on each of their first three strokes, while the Presidents cashed in on two of their first three. Faced with a convert-or-go-home situation, Caitlin Jennings and Hannah Daniels scored on back-to-back strokes, while Olandt forced sudden-death, refusing to allow the walk-off stroke.
After Olandt stopped the W & J stroke, McBride banked home the game-winner for the Highlanders.
In the first overtime Houghton created multiple scoring opportunities, firing off eight shots and generating eight penalty corners. Rena Israel, however, made five saves for the Presidents to keep the match scoreless.
In the second overtime, Olandt stopped three W&J shots and Daniels picked up a huge defensive save. Houghton countered but a shot by McBride hit the right post on a scoring opportunity following one of the Highlanders four penalty corners in the period.
