ROCHESTER, NY – Three Empire 8 student-athletes were named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Oct. 29 for their tremendous performances last weekend. Sophomore wide receiver
Cole Burgess of No. 18 Cortland State, sophomore defensive back
Kenny Hernandez of The College of Brockport and senior linebacker
Nick Milgate of Alfred University all earned the prestigious weekly honor.
Burgess caught eight passes for a career-high 187 yards and two touchdowns in Cortland's 42-37 win at St. John Fisher on Saturday. He caught 50-yard and 64-yard TD passes in the second quarter and also had a huge 36-yard reception on third-and-10 from midfield in the final three minutes to lead to a crucial Cortland field goal that extended the lead to five. Burgess' 187 receiving yards are the seventh-highest single-game total in school history. Burgess, a native of Greenwich, NY, is second in the Empire 8 with 617 yards receiving and seven touchdowns this season.
Milgate totaled 15 tackles, six solo, and earned two tackles for loss, along with a sack and a forced fumble in a 34-7 win against Hartwick. The Hilton, NY native was also named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Sept. 17 and was the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 21. Milgate leads the Empire 8 with 79 tackles and is third with four sacks this season.
Hernandez, a native of Monroe, NY, picked off two passes, one of which he returned 42 yards for a score in the fourth quarter, as Brockport topped visiting Utica 41-14 on Saturday. He also added three tackles and one pass breakup in the victory on his way to being named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The Empire 8 has been well represented on the D3football.com Team of the Week this season, with 10 different student-athlete or groups garnering 11 weekly honors. Milgate is the first two-time recipient.
Conference play is in high gear this weekend, as Cortland hosts Brockport in a battle of Empire 8 unbeatens. The Red Dragons would clinch the Empire 8 title with a win on Saturday, while a Brockport win would vault them into the top spot. In addition, Morrisville State heads to Hartwick, while Alfred hosts Utica on Nov. 2. Cortland is the lone Empire 8 unbeaten at 7-0 and is ranked No. 18 in both the D3football.com and American Football Coaches Association national polls. Brockport, who is 3-0 in league play and 6-1 overall, is also receiving votes in both polls. The Golden Eagles have won six straight games.
