PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team played in its final non-conference game of the regular season and came away with 5-0 win over the Oswego State Lakers. The Cardinals move their record to 14-4 while the Lakers end their season at 4-12.
Junior Bre Socker had a six-point night with two goals and two assists. The Liverpool native broke the program record for points in a single season with 58 this year. Sophomore Gianna Palma added two scores and one assist while senior Kelly Bergamo and juniors Lexi Kaplan and Lauryn Long all split time in net for the shutout.
Socker got the party started early in the first quarter with her 25
th goal of season. Fisher earned a corner and Danila Casseri slid the ball up to Lindsay Scott who went across to Socker. The junior blasted a shot from the arc that hit the back of the cage to make it 1-0 Cardinals.
Fisher kept the pressure on and broke through again with less than five minutes to go in the opening frame. Socker was on the left side of the net when she lifted the ball over the diving Oswego net minder to Palma who turned around and scored on the open net to give the Cardinals a two-goal advantage.
With less than a minute to go in the first, Socker sent the ball across the field to junior Alyssa Andres. The Clarence native slapped it into the net to put Fisher up by three.
To start the second quarter, Bergamo had to step up with a pair of saves early on. The score would stay 3-0 into halftime. Out of the break, Socker scored her second of the night to push the lead to four with Palma earning the assist.
Late in the third, Palma moved the ball up field and found open space. From 10-yards out the Brighton native bounced one past the Lakers' keeper for the final goal of the game.
Socker moved into second on the Cardinals' all-time points list with 145 throughout her career. Emily Markarian holds the record with 179. Scott, who entered the day tied for the most assists in the nation, now has 19 helpers on the year.
Long and fellow junior Olivia Rogers made their season debut. Sophomore Bridget Lenahan also made her first appearance of the season.
The Cardinals close out the regular season with hosting E8 rival Nazareth at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The senior class will be honored before the game.
