Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on Oct. 7, 2019 for games played from Sept. 30-Oct. 6. It is the sixth Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2019-20 season.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Co-RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Andrew Ford, St. John Fisher, So., Clinton, NY/Clinton
Ford enjoyed a record-setting day for the Cardinals on Saturday as he set a program mark for the fastest time at the Highlander Invite after placing first overall out of 115 runners. Ford, who set a new personal best in the process, crossed the finish line in 25:32.7 (5:08.3-mile rate), nearly four seconds ahead of the next finisher to earn his second E8 weekly accolade of 2019.
Co-RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Mitchell Marlow, Utica, Sr., Malone, NY/Franklin Academy
Marlow posted the fastest 8,000-meter time in program history, crossing the finish line on Saturday at the Paul Short Run in 25:27.7 (5:07.3-mile rate), hosted by Division I Lehigh University. Marlow eclipsed Utica's previous 8,000-meter best-time, set by Erik Winberg in 2016. It is Marlow’s third E8 weekly honor of 2019.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Kaitlyn Stinson, Utica, Gr., South Kortright, NY/South Kortright
Stinson placed 17th overall at Division I Lehigh University’s Paul Short Run on Saturday, crossing the finish line in a time of 22:53.1 (6:08.3-mile rate). She was one of 25 competitors to finish the 6,000-meter race in under 23 minutes to record Utica's second-best time ever at the Paul Short run. Stinson earned her second E8 weekly accolade of 2019.
FIELD HOCKEY
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sabrina Whitehouse, Utica, Jr., F, Greenwich, NY/Greenwich
Whitehouse had a hand in all four Utica goals on Saturday against Empire 8 rival Sage, a 4-0 victory for the Pioneers. Whitehouse scored a third quarter goal and assisted on three others, while firing five shots on goal. She is tied for the team lead in scoring with 12 points on three goals and six assists this season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Reghan Dunn, Washington & Jefferson, Jr., D, Earlesville, MD/Bohemian Manor
Dunn recorded the game-winning goal in a 1-0 double overtime win over Wooster College Wednesday night, while helping the Presidents defense register a pair of shutouts in a 2-0 week. She has two goals in 10 games this season, as Washington & Jefferson is currently riding a four-match winning streak.
FOOTBALL
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brett Segala, Cortland, Sr., QB, Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder
Segala completed 16-of-25 passes (64 percent) for 278 yards and four touchdowns, and also ran for a score, in Cortland's 44-12 win over visiting Utica to open Empire 8 play Saturday. He threw 55-yard and 47-yard TD passes in the first half to help Cortland take an early 14-3 lead and added 13-yard and 51-yard scoring tosses in the first five minutes of the third quarter to put the Red Dragons ahead 35-6. Segala added a 4-yard TD run with 3:25 left in the game. He finished the game with a 210.2 passing efficiency rating. A two-time E8 Offensive Player of the Week, Segala now has 13 touchdown passes to just two interceptions in four games this season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alex West, Brockport, Sr., LB, Dansville, NY/Dansville
West totaled seven tackles and 2.5 sacks as Brockport pitched a shutout on the road against St. John Fisher College in Courage Bowl XV Saturday. The Brockport defense held the Cardinals to -3 rushing yards on the day as the Golden Eagles won their fourth consecutive game and improved to 1-0 in the Empire 8. West, a 2019 D3football.com Preseason All-American, leads the team with 27 tackles and 3.5 sacks this season.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Angelo Foster, Cortland, Sr., WR, Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy
Foster blocked a PAT kick that a teammate returned for a defensive two-point conversion during Cortland's 44-12 win vs. Utica. Foster also caught three passes for 110 yards and two long touchdowns (55 and 51 yards).
MEN’S GOLF
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Colin McGaugh, St. John Fisher, Sr., Hamilton, NY/Hamilton
McGaugh won his second straight Empire 8 weekly honor, using a strong rally on Sunday to finish as the individual low scorer in the fall portion of the 2019-20 Empire 8 Golf Championship, held at Seven Oaks Golf Course on Oct. 5-6. McGaugh began the tournament by shooting a 76 on Saturday, before carding a 74 in cold, windy conditions on Sunday. His two-round total of 150 (+6) put him in the lead by one stroke over Erik Schleicher of Oswego.
MEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Justin Eaton, Alfred, Fr., F, Williamson, NY/Williamson
Eaton tallied seven points in leading the Saxons to overtime wins against Westminster College and Hartwick College last week. Eaton started the week with the game-winning goal against Westminster. He followed that up by scoring two goals, while adding an assist in a 4-3 win at Hartwick Saturday. Eaton, a two-time E8 Player of the Week leads the league with 10 goals and 21 points this season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brian Wilkin, Nazareth, Sr., GK, Rochester, NY/Hilton
Wilkin made five saves in Saturday's 1-0 win over Sage for his third shutout of the 2019 season and school-record tying 19th for his career. Earlier in the week, Wilkin had six saves in a 4-1 win over SUNY Delhi. For the season, Wilkin leads all Empire 8 goalkeepers with nine wins, a 0.79 goals-against average and an .824 save percentage in 12 starts for the Golden Flyers.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Natalie Ricci, Sage, So., F, Cohoes, NY/Cohoes
Ricci scored four goals and added an assist for nine points in two wins to earn her second E8 weekly honor of 2019. She opened the week with a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over SUNY Poly on Wednesday. Ricci recorded her first hat-trick of the season, as Sage jumped to a 3-0 lead in a win over Empire 8 foe Alfred on Saturday. Ricci is second in the league with 19 points and leads all E8 players with 2.71 points per game.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kallan Shertzer, Sage, Fr., GK, Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa
Shertzer made 14 saves in a 2-0 week for the Gators. She began the week by making five saves in a 2-0 win over SUNY Poly on Wednesday. On Saturday, Shertzer stopped nine shots in a 3-2 victory over Empire 8 rival Alfred. Shertzer is 6-4 in net with a 1.20 goals against average, .867 save percentage and four shutouts in 2019.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brooke Murphy, Nazareth, Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse
Murphy improved her individual record to 4-1 in both singles and doubles in 2019 with four wins for the Golden Flyers last week. In a 6-3 loss to St. John Fisher last Wednesday, Murphy won in straight sets at second singles and teamed with Maelah Nadeau for an 8-5 win at first doubles. Murphy and Nadeau combined for an 8-0 win at first doubles and Murphy won 6-3, 7-6 at second singles in Nazareth’s 7-2 win over Sage Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brooke Lewandowski, Houghton, Sr., OH/MB, South Wales, NY/Calvary Baptist (PA)
Lewandowski led the Highlanders to a pair of wins Saturday, hitting .317 while slamming 20 kills and adding 11 blocks in just seven sets of action. She hit .444 with 11 kills and two blocks in a win over Keuka and added nine kills and nine blocks in a victory over Wells. She leads Houghton in kills (149), points (181), hitting percentage (.284) and blocks (45) this season. Her 0.78 blocks per set leads all E8 players.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Lauren Gilbert, St. John Fisher, Fr., OH, Dublin, OH/Dublin-Jerome
Gilbert slammed 48 kills over 12 sets as the Cardinals went 3-1 on the week. Gilbert opened the week with 11 kills in a sweep on Nazareth before adding seven kills and three blocks in a 3-0 win at Medaille. Gilbert closed out her week with 12 kills and three digs against Mount Saint Mary before posting a career-high 18 kills and a .390 kill percentage against Union College. Gilbert, a two-time E8 Rookie of the Week, is fourth in the league with 196 kills this season.
