ROCHESTER, NY – The unbeaten SUNY Cortland football team (4-0) has ascended into the top-25 in both the most recent D3football.com American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) national polls for the week of games ending Oct. 5. The Red Dragons are currently No. 22 in the D3football.com poll and 25th in the D3football.com poll.
The Red Dragons are off to a tremendous start under head coach Dan MacNeill, having out-scored its opponents, 197-40 in four wins this season. Most recently, Cortland opened up Empire 8 play by defeating Utica, 44-12 on Oct. 5. The Red Dragons are sixth nationally in Division III, averaging 49.3 points per game and eighth, allowing 10 points per contest. Overall, Cortland is third in average scoring margin (39.3) per game.
Senior quarterback Brett Segala leads the Empire 8 with 13 touchdowns to just two interceptions, while throwing for 1,023 yards in four games. His 255.8 yards passing per game also leads the league. Zach Tripodi is second among all E8 running backs with 452 yards on the ground, while his 6.8 yards per carry leads the league. Wide receivers Cole Burgess, Angelo Foster and Jason Carlock have combined for 46 catches, 811 yards and 13 touchdowns. Devin Smith leads the defense with 4.5 tackles for loss, including 4.0 sacks. Stone Murray, Dylan Dubuque and Evans Riviere have two interceptions apiece. Gregory Alfieri is one of six Red Dragons to have at least 20 tackles (28).
This weekend features three Empire 8 conference matchups, as Hartwick is at Brockport, St. John Fisher travels to Utica and Morrisville hosts Cortland. Brockport is also receiving votes in both polls.
