GENEVA, NY - The Utica College women's soccer team's historic season came to an end Saturday as it fell to nationally ranked No. 2 William Smith College by a score of 3-0.
The Pioneers, who made their NCAA Tournament debut after capturing the program's first ever Empire 8 Conference Championship, wrap up their season with an overall record of 12-6-1, marking their best season since 2005.
The Herons opened the scoring at 7:41 as Sheila McQuillen put in a rebound off the right post for her first of the year. This marked the first goal Utica has given up in 231:44 minutes of action.
William Smith added another score just before the close of the first half when Sarah Gray beat Utica keeper Allison Wagner for her second of the season.
The Herons put the game away with 4:45 remaining in regulation as Gray fired a shot from just outside the box that sailed just under the cross bar for her second of the day.
Wagner finished with 22 saves on the day, while Amanda Kesler had one save for William Smith. 22 saves is a new career-high for Wagner, and is also just seven shy of the all-time record for an NCAA Tournament game. Wagner wraps up her career as the program's career record holder in saves (560) and shutouts (19), and she is second all-time with 25 career wins. Wagner also holds the single-season record with eight shutouts this season.
The Pioneers will also bid farewell to seniors Mikayla Blumenstock, Kendrah Stewart, and Lauren MacDonald. Blumenstock wraps up her two-year career as a Pioneer ranked first on the College's single-season scoring list for points (47) and goals (22). She is also second in career goals (34) and points (74).
