Sophomore Alea Steigerwald of the St. John Fisher women’s volleyball team was named a 2019 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-New York Region selection and honorable mention All-American for the second consecutive year.
Steigerwald led the Cardinals to their first Empire 8 Championship in program history and a spot in the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament in 2019. She was named the Empire 8 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and also earned E8 Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Player accolades. Steigerwald was a six-time Empire 8 Player of the Week this season.
The Penfield, NY native was one of three sophomores to make the 14-member All-region team and one of five outside hitters. Following her All-American freshman campaign, Steigerwald broke her own program record by slamming 501 kills and set new career-highs with 68 service aces and 33 total blocks in 2019. She added 396 digs and hit .245 overall with 589 total points.
Steigerwald is among the national leaders in both kills (4.39) and points per set (5.17). She recorded 22 double-doubles on the season and 28 matches with at least 10 kills and five with more than 20. On Aug. 31, Steigerwald recorded a career-high 33 kills, while hitting .429 against Capital University.
In just two seasons, Steigerwald has slammed 993 kills and has 811 digs and 120 service aces.
St. John Fisher finished 23-11 overall and was a perfect 7-0 in Empire 8 play in 2019.
