Nazareth College holds a slim lead in the 2019-20 Empire 8 Commissioner’s Cup standings, as the fall standings were announced on December 6. The Golden Flyers posted a 0.816 composite score, and lead by just over three one-hundredths of a point following the fall season. The E8 will post updated Commissioner's Cup standings following the winter sports season and the final standings will be released in May after the completion of the spring sports campaigns.
The league enjoyed tremendous parity during the fall, as five different institutions won league championships. For the complete E8 Commissioner's Cup standings, please see below.
The Golden Flyers earned a total of 43.25 points by their fall sports teams, with men’s soccer team earning their first league title in 13 years to go along with runner-up finishes in men’s cross country, field hockey, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Nazareth qualified for the E8 postseason tournaments in all five team sports, finishing in the top half of the standings in all seven of its sports.
St. John Fisher College is currently in second place, with a percentage total of 0.781 on the strength of its first league titles in women’s tennis and women’s volleyball and runner-up honors in women’s cross country. Houghton College is third overall with a percentage total of 0.6132 after winning its first league title since joining in 2012, the women’s cross country crown. Utica College is right behind Houghton in fourth with a composite score of 0.5921 on the strength of its first women’s soccer title and a third straight men’s cross country championship. Hartwick rounded out the top five with a percentage total of 0.520, as its field hockey squad won the 2019 Empire 8 Championship.
Commissioner’s Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 conference standings at the completion of the regular season and post-season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale). A team's regular season finish will be added to its post-season finish and divided by two for the final total for that sport.
Teams tied for a position in the regular season standings are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual amount of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine their overall percentage.
