Empire 8 Announces Players of the Week - December 9, 2019

Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on Dec. 9, 2019 for games played from Dec. 2-Dec. 8. It is the 15th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2019-20 season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Zach Stenglein, Nazareth, So., G, Rochester, NY/Phillips Exeter
Stenglein scored a career-high 20 points in the Golden Flyers' lone game of the week, a 71-66 non-conference win over SUNY Poly on Tuesday. Among his seven field goals were two 3-pointers. He also went 4-for-5 from the free throw line and had three steals. For the season, Stenglein is averaging 11.9 points and 5.0 assists per game this season.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Thomas Morreale, Utica, Fr., F, Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro
Morreale led the team in the scoring column as Utica took care of local rival Morrisville State with an 89-75 win on Wednesday. He had 18 points, five rebounds, one block and one assist, while shooting 7-for-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
 
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Megan Flynn, Sage, Sr., F, Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls
Flynn broke Sage’s single-game record by pulling down 25 rebounds to go along with a career-high 24 points in an 87-84 win over Westfield State on Saturday. Flynn’s 25 rebounds tied the Empire 8 single-game rebounding record, originally set by Lauren Long of Rochester Institute of Technology in 2000. She started the week by scoring 11 points and pulling down eight boards at unbeaten Middlebury. Flynn is averaging 12.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per contest in 2019-20.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Ana Ion, Alfred, Fr., G, Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville
Ion earned her fifth double-digit scoring game of 2019-20 on Saturday, as she was 5-for-8 from the floor with one made 3-pointer and a 3-for-4 showing at the free throw line for 14 points in a win over SUNY Delhi. She tacked on seven points against No. 15 SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday by going 3-for-5 from the floor with a 3-pointer. Ion had five rebounds and two steals against the Broncos while picking up one assist at Geneseo.
 
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kyle Rollins, St. John Fisher, Jr., Sprints/Jumps, Geneseo, NY/Groveland
Rollins showcased his versatility in the Cardinals' season debut as he came across the finish line first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.50 seconds to qualify for the Atlantic Regional Championship. That is currently the sixth-best time in the region. Rollins won his heat by a mere two one-hundredths of a second. Rollins also crossed the finish line of the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.40 seconds.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kaleb Luton, Nazareth, Fr., Sprints/Jumps, Amherst, NY/Sweet Home
Luton began his Nazareth career in impressive fashion by finishing sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.57 meters and seventh in the long jump with a finish of 6.45 meters at the season-opening Nazareth Alumni Meet in Friday, the first at the new Golisano Training Center. Both jumps were second best all time at Nazareth. He was also ninth in the high jump, clearing 1.75 meters. Luton also finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with an impressive time of 8.64 seconds, just .02 off the school record.
 
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Brenna Johnson, Nazareth, So., Sprints/Jumps, Cortland, NY/Homer
Johnson helped Nazareth to a first-place finish in the sprint medley relay with a school-record time of 4:37.26 at the season-opening Nazareth Alumni Meet in Friday, the first at the new Golisano Training Center. She was also seventh in the 60-meter dash in a time of 8.21 seconds, just .02 off her personal best, and seventh in the 300 meters, where she was first in her heat with a time of 43.19 seconds.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jordan Lehman, St. John Fisher, Jr., Throws, Port Leyden, NY/South Lewis
Lehman had a strong debut to the season as Fisher competed in the Nazareth College Alumni Meet on Friday. The junior placed second in the shot put with a personal best throw of 11.94 meters, which qualified her for the Atlantic Regional Championship. Lehman also set a personal record in the weight throw of 13.51 meters while taking fourth in the competition.
 
MEN’S SWIMMNG & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Andy Edmister, Alfred, Sr., Backstroke, Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central
Edmister totaled 47 points in individual events as he led the Saxons at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational over the weekend. He was also part of all five point-scoring relays during the three-day event to total 222 points with four eighth place finishes and a seventh-place finish. As an individual, Edmister had a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.86 to garner 24 points. He earned 23 points in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.25.
 
WOMEN’S SWIMMNG & DIVING
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Lauren Serotta, Alfred, Jr., Backstroke/IM, Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna
Serotta led the Saxons at the three-day Ithaca College Bomber Invitational where she totaled 30 individual points and was part of the relay teams that scored a total of 154 points. Her top individual finish was a ninth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.53 seconds, which earned 20 points. She scored five points in both the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.62 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.75 as she finished 20th in both events. She was part of the 200-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley relays that finished ninth and the 400-yard freestyle that placed 10th.
