Final Few Days of Regular Season Provide Postseason Opportunities for E8 Hoop Teams

With just two days remaining in the Men's and Women's Basketball regular seasons, the Empire 8 Conference has released the tiebreaking scenarios which will determine the seeds for the upcoming Championships. The fields are set in both men's and women's E8 championships, but the seeds are very much in flux with the regular season ending on Tuesday night.

CLOSER LOOK

Empire 8 Conference Men's Basketball

Championship Field:
Alfred, Nazareth, St. John Fisher, and Stevens have all earned berths into the 2019 Men's Basketball Championship

Postseason Scenarios:
The winner of the Alfred vs. Nazareth game Tuesday night earns the No. 1 seed and the right to host this weekend's Empire 8 Conference Men's Basketball Championship. The loser of this game earns the No. 2 seed.

The No. 3 seed will go to St. John Fisher (would lose tiebreak vs Nazareth if they ended the regular season with identical records). Stevens has earned the No. 4 seed and will take on the top seed in one semifinal game Friday evening.

Empire 8 Conference Women's Basketball
Championship Field:
Hartwick, Nazareth, St. John Fisher, and Stevens have all earned berths into the 2019 Women's Basketball Championship

Postseason Scenarios:
1. Hartwick earns the #1 seed with a win in their final game at Sage on Monday night.

2. A Nazareth win and a Hartwick loss would give the top seed to the Golden Flyers. If Hartwick and Nazareth end up tied following the completion of the regular season, it will depend on how the No. 3 seed shakes out. If St. John Fisher earns the No. 3 seed, Nazareth is the No. 1 seed by virtue of their 2-0 record durind the season against Fisher. If Stevens is the No. 3 seed (Fisher loss), then Hartwick would get the top spot and host this weekend's E8 Championship action.

If Fisher and Stevens end up tied AND Hartwick and Nazareth are also tied, the 3rd-place tie must be broken first in order to determine the top seed as top seed is the priority. In this instance, Fisher would earn the No. 3 seed meaning Nazareth would be the No. 1 (refer above). They have identical records versus league opponents (in this case we combine the results vs Nazareth and Hartwick since they are tied - both would be 1-3 combined vs the duo). Moving to the next criteria, road record vs conference opponents - Fisher would be 7-1, while Stevens is 6-2.

Thus seeding would be No.1 Nazareth, No. 2 Hartwick, No. 3 Fisher, No. 4 Stevens

3. If Nazareth, Stevens, and Fisher are all tied at 12-4 - Nazareth earns the No. 2 seed via a 3-1 record (mini-conference) vs Fisher (1-3) and Stevens (2-2). That advances Nazareth from the mini-conference, and then we compare Fisher and Stevens. In this scenario, Fisher get's the No. 3 seed via 1-1 record vs Hartwick while Stevens went 0-2 vs the top team.
