Stevens Women, Utica Men Impress During Day One of E8 Indoor Track & Field Championships

Dello Russo Headlines Defending Champion Stevens' Effort During Day One of E8's
The Utica Men's program and the Stevens' Women's program lead following Day One of the 2019 Empire 8 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Pioneers impressed in the field events and got a dominating performance in the mile, while Stevens'
Gina Dello Russo stood out Friday at Utica's Todd & Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center.
The Championships conclude later today and a champion will be crowned in both men's and women's action.
CLOSER LOOK
On the men's side, Utica won three of the seven final events. led by a pair of wins in the field events.
Keanu Heedram won the shot, while
Marquis Simpson won the Long Jump. Mitch Marlow took gold in the one mile race, winning a thrilling edition by just over three seconds. His time of 4:23.52 is currently tops in the E8 this season. Also winning events during Day One were student-athletes representing Houghton, St. John Fisher, and Stevens.
In women's action Friday, Stevens' Dello Russo stole the show. She posted the fifth-fastest time in the nation in the 400-meter dash with her effort of 56.47, and then later went on to win the pole vault as she cleared 3.20 meters. Her efforts earned the Ducks 20 points on the night and help provide them with a lead following Friday's action. Overall, Stevens won five of the seven events including three track titles and two field championships.
