April 8 – April 14
Baseball
Player – Christian Tiffin, Utica (Senior, Verona, N.Y.)
Tiffin had a terrific week at the plate as the Pioneers went 4-1 in games that were completed. He was 9-for-22 with five runs scored and ten RBI. Highlights of his week included a 3-for-5 performance with two runs scored and three RBI in a loss to Hamilton, and a 3-for-5 performance with two runs scored and five RBI in a Sunday win against Houghton that led to Utica sweeping the series against the Highlanders. In the third game of the series against Houghton, four of his five RBI came with one swing of a bat as he launched a seismic bases-loaded shot over the left field fence for a grand slam on senior day. The grand slam plated the winning runs for Utica in the matchup.
Pitcher – Emmett Dunn, Ithaca (Senior, Manlius, N.Y.)
Dunn improved his record to 4-1 on the season with a seven-inning, one-hit shutout performance against Stevens on Wednesday. Ithaca won the Empire 8 contest, 5-0, as Dunn struck out seven batters in the outing.
Rookie – Ryan Finegan, Stevens (Freshman, Cumming, Ga.)
Finegan registered a .500 batting average in Stevens' 2-2 week. The Georgia native collected seven hits in 14 at bats, including his first collegiate double. The freshman outfielder added four RBI and four runs for the Ducks.
Men’s Lacrosse
Player – Nicholas Miller, St. John Fisher (Sophomore, Ithaca, N.Y.)
Miller had two record-breaking performances this past week as the Cardinals remained perfect in Empire 8 action with victories over Utica and Hartwick. The sophomore attackman totaled 10 goals, seven assists for 17 points throughout the two-game week. He scored four goals along with four assists in the Cardinals 21-6 win over the Pioneers, while also breaking the program’s single-season record for goals in a season. Versus the Hawks, Miller tallied six goals and three assists, in route to becoming the program’s record holder for most points in a single-season. The Ithaca native now leads the Empire 8 with 58 goals and 81 points.
Goalkeeper – Carson White, Stevens (Senior, Downingtown, Pa.)
White totaled 15 saves, including nine in the third quarter as No. 11/No. 10 Stevens pulled away from Nazareth in the second half en route to a 19-11 victory.
Women’s Lacrosse
Player – Marissa Hews, Houghton (Junior, Norwood, Pa.)
Hews had 12 goals in helping lead Houghton to a 2-0 week. She also added seven ground balls and 19 draw controls over the two games, and registered a .484 shot percentage.
Goalkeeper – Ashley Jablonowski, Hartwick (Junior, Levittown, N.Y.)
Jablonowski had 21 saves over Hartwick's two games last week. Against Sage on Wednesday, she stopped all four shots on goal she faced and had a ground ball in the thirty minutes she played, leaving at the break with a 10-0 lead. Jablonowski's day against Fisher on Saturday was more eventful, as she played all 60 minutes in net. She made 17 saves on 30 shots on goal (her second-highest total of the season), including ten saves in a second half that saw the Cardinals score just three times. She also had three ground balls scooped, second on the team.
Softball
Player – Samantha Schattin, Stevens (Junior, Princeton Junction, N.J.)
Schattin ended Stevens' 7-1 week with a .357 batting average. The New Jersey native collected 10 hits in 28 at bats, including three doubles and a triple. Schattin went 4-for-4 at the plate in Stevens' 3-1 win over Elmira and 3-for-3 in the 9-0 win over Utica. The junior added three RBI, eight runs, and six stolen bases.
Pitcher – Marissa Cappello, Stevens (Senior, Mantua, N.J.)
Cappello collected four wins and one loss on the mound as Stevens went 7-1 over the week. The Mantua, New Jersey native registered 37 strikeouts in her five appearances, including a season-best 13 against Houghton. Over the week, Cappello only allowed two earned runs in 23 innings of work.
Men’s Tennis
Player – Louis Guillaume Garcia, Houghton (Sophomore, Castelldefels, Spain)
Louies-Guillaume Garcia went 3-1 overall in E8 conference play, going 2-0 at Number 1 singles. Tuesday, he defeated John Miller (St. John Fisher) 6-2, 7-6 (5). Saturday he bested Elmira’s No. 1. Steve Gervase 6-4, 6-1.
Outdoor Track & Field
Men’s Track Athlete – Tyler Deuschle, Houghton (Junior, Depew, N.Y.)
Deuschle completed the 5k in a time of 15:18.90 at the Bucknell Bison Open. His effort is the fastest time in the Empire 8 this year by over seven seconds and makes him a qualifier for the All Atlantic Region Championships.
Men’s Field Athlete – Ross Mathewson, St. John Fisher (Senior, Cicero, N.Y.)
Mathewson had the highlight in the hammer throw event over the weekend at the Rochester Alumni Invite. The senior tossed an impressive 51.77 meter throw, which cemented his position at number one in the Empire 8 Conference.
Women’s Track Athlete – Gina Dello Russo, Stevens (Junior, Whippany, N.J.)
The All-American broke her own school record in the 200-meter dash at the Coach P. Invitational, topping the field in 24.86 seconds. The feat came three hours after the Whippany, New Jersey native finished 11th in the pole vault. Her time in the 200 is currently fifth-best in all of Division III this spring.
Women’s Field Athlete – Danielle Perry, Alfred (Junior, Leicester, N.Y.)
Perry broke her own school record in the triple jump with a mark of 11.07m (36’-3.8”) on Saturday at the Messiah College Invitational. The mark not only broke the school record, but also won the event. She supplemented her triple jump, school record win with a fifth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 4.88m.
