Kyle Rollins cemented his legacy in St. John Fisher program history on Friday afternoon as the sophomore won the high jump with a leap of 2.12 meters and became a national champion at the NCAA Outdoor National Championship at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. He becomes the fourth individual national champion in program history.
CLOSER LOOK
Rollins, who finished as the national runner-up in the high jump during the indoor season, became the fourth individual national champion and third from the track and field team in Fisher's history as he joins
Scott Harris, Jr. (2008 – men's golf),
Mark VanMarter (2018 - long jump) and
Peter Girardi (2018 – 400m hurdles).
Rollins, who was also named an All-American for the fourth time in his career, cruised through the first three heights as he cleared 1.98, 2.03 and 2.06 meters on his first attempt. The sophomore missed his first two attempts at 2.09m before clearing the bar on his third and final try to move on to 2.12m. With three competitors left in the event, all missed on their initial attempt, however, Rollins would clear 2.12 on his second jump to tie his own program record at 6'11.5''.
Needing to successfully clear the measurement to advance, neither of the remaining competitors were able to muster enough height to clear the bar as Rollins became the youngest national champion in Fisher history.
