Emily Trotman Throws First Career No-Hitter in Leading Fisher to a Day One Win

St. John Fisher and Stevens - the top two seeds in the Empire 8 Conference Softball Championship - posted wins during the opening day of play behind a pair of extremely strong pitching efforts. Here's how Friday's action at Stevens played out -

#1 Stevens 1, #4 Nazareth 0 | BOXSCORE
Christine LaRochelle
and Marissa Cappello combined to throw a one-hit shutout and top-seeded Stevens advanced to the winners' bracket with a 1-0 win over fourth-seeded Nazareth. The Ducks scored the game's only run on an RBI groundout in the second inning by Abigail Circelli

Stevens now advances to the winners' bracket of this year's E8 Championship, and will take on St. John Fisher in the first game of the day tomorrow. That game will begin at 11am.

#2 St. John Fisher 3, #3 Alfred 0 | BOXSCORE  |  THE FINAL OUT OF TROTMAN'S NO HITTER
Fisher sophomore Emily Trotman pitched her first-career no-hitter as the second-seeded Cardinals blanked third-seeded Alfred, 3-0, in the opening round of the Empire 8 Championship at Weehawken Waterfront Park. Trotman allowed just two walks in the win and finished the game with a pair of strikeouts to move to 20-8 on the season. With the win, she became just the fourth player in program history to notch 20 wins in a season.

After setting the side down in order to begin the game, Fisher scored the only runs it would need in the bottom of the first.  Julia Sortisio inched closer to 200 career hits with a leadoff single up the middle before taking second on a wild pitch. Maddy Pepke moved her to third with a single to left to put runners on the corners with no outs. With Ashley Prince at the plate, Fisher showed bunt as both runners took off with Sortisio stealing home to give Fisher a 1-0 edge. Sortisio's steal also made history as it moved the outfielder into a tie for first place on Fisher's career steals list with 38. Sammie Torlish lined a base hit to left to score Pepke to make it 2-0.

From there, Alfred was unable to touch Trotman as the Cardinals added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with Mary Claire Grosvenor picking up an RBI with a ground out to short that staked the Cardinals to a 3-0 lead.
